Average (at best) SDET here, in my 40s. TC right now is maybe $90K? Base salary is 70 in Phoenix AZ. It seems like I'm the only one on Blind who isn't making six figures. I mean there's gotta be more people out there like me who barely skate by lol in fact during my next performance review I'm honestly going to ask for a pay cut because I don't feel like I bring enough to the table to warrant my meager salary. Where are my fellow underachievers? 😅

PDX @ 84% of the Bay Area, LOL! Median 2br rent in PDX is ~$1800 vs $4500 in SF. Car registration is hundreds a year vs. $86 for 2 years. California has ~10% sales tax. There’s no way. 50% maybe.

Not making $100k TC in your 40s is pretty bad for having software development skills. Did you go to a 4 year college?

If you have skills and experience, no one cares about a degree. You're better off spending those years working someplace where you can get paid to grow.

No. Any legit tech company reviews their financial structure on a quarterly basis, tc stock appreciation would be included in any basic financial model public or private.

Example #1 of the bs u see on here.

Arizona isn’t expensive. Overall. So you need to understand the difference here of posters.

Not saying equal - but expensive enough it has to factored in specially for the region (e.g. a single person could easily spend $250-300/mo on electricity - family more like $500-600)

At those prices it seems like solar panels would be a no brainer, especially given how sunny it is

Dude, blind is a microcosm of the top 10% of people in tech... Most people don't work at the companies that people do here and most people don't make the kind of money that people do here.

If you're happy with your lot then be content, otherwise, upskill and move to a company that competes in the 75th+ percentile of the market.

Engineers at the top tech firms (private and public), up and coming startups, innovation centres w/in nontech companies and top financial firms probably equates to top 10-15% of all engineers.

~3.6m engineers and 300-400k in the top end of the market sounds about right. Microsoft alone has 50k+ engineers. Google probably 30k+. Amazon.. a lot

Given the 3.6m figure which I checked just now, I'd say blind then is top maybe 2-3% of that at best? One should keep in mind that within these companies only a smallish subset of engineers actually use Blind (anyone care to ballpark %?). In top 5 market cap tech companies looks like there are ~150k swes.

    Two things.
    1) You’re in Phoenix where cost of living is nothing compared to Bay Area or Seattle.
    2) Your attitude. You wonder why you are making less yet you consider even your current role one where you’re “barely skating by” to the point where you say you’re going to ask for a pay cut. If you don’t think you’re worth more then other people won’t either. That said, just like many on Blind seem to value their worth as human beings by the worth of their high TC, I get the vibe from you that you’re almost... proud... of your low TC.

Seems like a victim mentality, you have all the tools and background to perform better at your job and increase your value over time both to yourself and your employer, but it doesn’t seem like you want to do either. My two cents.

If someone told you they'd been half-assing it, would you keep them on staff? No, you'd start thinking they're not invested in their job or they want to work part-time. And that you've seriously overestimated your needs. Either way, doesn't bode well for your tenure at the company. But if you're set financially, who cares.

Except it can be. Take Orange county. Anaheim has a median house price of 600kish. Irvine 850k. San Fran 1.3 million. The problem is the housing prices and what people have been willing to ratchet up to pay.

I lived in Phoenix and Bay area both. 90k is good to live in Phoenix. Cost of living is 50% cheaper than bay area. Bay area 200k will not provide quality of life which Phoenix will provide in 100k. Don’t be part of rat race where TC of random anonymous people define success. I am moving back to Phoenix to join a startup. I will have better life there even after taking pay cut.
