My first serious piece of code over 100 lines was in 1997 in Pascal that drew the Mandelbrot set on screen with interactive box to zoom in and out. I have a PhD from a top US university (not CS though). My TC is 340k today. Am I under paid or over paid? Context: new hires with 2 yoe are getting 450k.
PhD doesn’t make you worth more comp
And it's an unrelated PhD
450? With PhD is ok
You get paid based on what you negotiate. You are underpaid if you can negotiate a higher pay
Without much context it doesn’t mean much - and if you’ve been working for a while, then you’re either behind in tech, are terrible in communication and negotiation (from salary to role), or need to focus on your soft skill to take on more management/leadership/strategic tasks.
What's your YOE?
I don’t think new hires with 2 yoe get paid 450k. Perhaps the 0.001%
if u gotta ask
Basically poverty levels
I guess the question is what you did between 1997 and today. It sounds like either you an internally promoted L6 or stuck at L5 at Amazon. In the former case, you get what you fight for and prove at Amazon, no more. In the case of the latter, if you are having trouble with that L6 promo, just leave, lots of other opportunities. My first code was in the mid 80s in BASIC, BTW. Not sure what that tells you except that I am not a kid anymore.

New hires with 2yoe getting 450k - highly questionable or you re looking at p99.99
New hires with PhD and 2yoe at 450k sounds reasonable for top 10%
