How is the work culture of AWS? How is the politics? Does any team has work life balance? #aws #softwareengineer
You know aws is really huge right?
It's team/manager/org dependent but I have good wlb. Things are overall good
do you mind sharing any information on the manager/team/org. m looking to internally change. thanks
Most old organizations (S3, SQS, DDB) are super big, and they move pretty slow. Most of the work you do is going to be ops ( replacing dependencies, manually repair clusters etc etc.) and reviews (design review is just small part of this, most reviews are going to be related to operation) And there are plenty of people who have been stuck in L5 for many years, and waiting to be promoted to L6. Lots of politics around the promotion and how to get top tier review score. And teams running products by hosting open source projects ( presto aka Athena, emr aka spark etc) are relatively small, and has no technical depth. They are even worse than S3 SQS, or DDB. You are not going to learn how to develop core spark engine there, all you do is operation. You can go through Andy Jessy’s reinvent keynotes to know the most visible team in AWS. But don’t expect any WLB from them.
8 weeks in and regretting every minute-- Finished the cultish indoctrination Embark plan over the holidays because no one was around. Clear favorites and constantly being voluntold for the sucky tasks that the favorites don't want to do. Dysfunctional, lots of manual reporting and manual processes surprising for a tech company. Made to use Amazon's half-baked tools that have little to no useful functionality.
Been at company 5 yrs. Heavy politics. Some teams worse than others, but overall highly political.
Only work, no life and no balance at all. Culture is toxic and any day you can turn into a fodder for URA/PIP quota. Unless your desperate do not join.

How did this happen? (Meta Stock)
Been 5 months so far.. surprisingly found better than Microsoft in many aspects especially around politics
You mean politics is less or more?
Depending on actual AWS team, politics might be more or less than MSFT. Usually service team have less politics but more crazy oncall.
