I have worked at TikTok US core tech for 3 years. AMA.
I got a call from amazon for Advertising group. Can anyone throw some light about the team. Is PIP normal ? Current TC: $270K #amazon
Assuming your role is SDE. Amazon ads is a big org but I’ve only heard stories of it being a dumpster fire. It will depend on the exact team but chances of getting a bad team are high. Talk to your hiring manager. Ask someone you know who works at amazon to look at team’s operations(sev2s etc) & wikis for red flags( I do it for my friends). I highly recommend talking to one of the SDEs on team to assess team culture. If you do get an offer but don’t like the team your recruiter should work with you to get a different team. P.S. my manager was an ads TPM turned SDM and I changed the team in 6 months. Even they had bad stories about ads.
Waww. Thank you for the insights
The website stack is an actual dumpster fire. Hundreds of little packages written by people who don’t know what they’re doing because the main teams don’t want people contributing to the repositories they own. Even small changes can take a couple of days to get implemented. If your future team has to get UI features launched, I’d suggest finding a different team. Source: was in Ads, left to join a different org a couple of months ago.
PIP stories aside, I work with an ads team and they’ve been busy trying to justify their existence since the iOS ads update earlier this year (it’s not going well for them). They’re in the bargaining phase of the five stages of grief, and they’re probably gonna get reorged here pretty soon
Ads team are very toxic . Run away
Completely disagree. If you feel this place toxic why do you work here?
Agreed, the business is very strong. It’ll grow no matter what happens. Which becomes a problem since bad decisions can’t be recognized. Managers get rewarded for growth even if their systems/ideas were terrible, because at the end of the year the revenue grew. Better decisions might have resulted in twice as much revenue growth.
Any reviews about CCS? (Campaign & Creative Services) team?
Yeah. One got piped and left Amazon this year in my team.
Was it deserved?
I don’t think so. Manager had to put a person to pip even though everyone is super star in the team. But this is not ads specific story. This is what happens in Amazon.
