The rise of the proverbial ‘smart home’ is finally upon us. Black Friday ads are dominated by sales for smart thermostats, locks, lights, outlets, and more. While there’s certainly room for multiple vendors to succeed in this space, I’m curious about the current rivalry between Google and Amazon. Specifically, who do *you* think will become the leader for smart home interfaces? This isn’t a hardware question or about who’s better today. I’m wondering more about the next 3-5+ years. Who do you think will emerge as the clear market leader? Who’s making greater investments in natural language processing? Video recognition? Ubiquitous support for 3rd party devices?
I have both. I can't use Alexa for much but I use Home all the time.
Same, Alexa is about 70% less accurate than Home. Just listed mine on Craigslist
Obviously google. alexa cannot answer many questions and is a piece of junk for me.
I have both and I found that I never use either of them for that purpose. I use them for media and home automation only. In the first few months it was fun asking them trivia questions but that gets old fast. I think it'll eventually come down to who has the better music and video content and that the quality of the AI won't matter (or will be close enough no one will care). In other words do you prefer Google Play music or Amazon prime music? Content, not core technology, will determine the winner.
Stuff a wireless controller in everything is like mobile phone in the 70s. The future of smart home is new appliances and tools most of us haven’t even imagined yet, with Google AI at the very core.
Going by the deals on Google Home and mini, and sold out shelves / signs at all major retailers, Google Mini may be the most gifted / sold item this holiday season. Having been using Alexa for a while and 1 day with Home, if smart speaker category were to become mainstay, it is Google’s fight to loose, Mini is so much better.
I find google homes answers to be way better and more useful, but I fucking hate having to say “ok google”. It’s so awkward and unnatural.
did u try “hey google”?
I think have to use two words everytime you interface it is inefficient. Wish Google allowed a way to name it, like "Jarvis".
Amzn will have market share for next few years due to head start and mindshare. But google home is much smarter and will eventually lead.
Just picked up two mini google assistant at $29 each wow! #walmart #blackfriday
If you used Google shopping express, they gave 25$ Walmart coupon along with it.
Google and Amazon must sell this free of cost .. they are collecting tons and tons of consumer data which is worth billions.
Amazon has built a much better ecosystem and is leveraging partners to get Alexa everywhere. Google is trying to go it alone which will reduce their potential market share
Google is better at AI, so expect Google home to take the lead eventually.
Agree
yet am appalled how little of that ai is currently used in google home
