6+ year Sr. Manager at AWS. Really not the same place I started working at. Seems with the hiring freeze, layoffs, targeted firings, and promotion of those that have zero empathy and care only about URA and LE, Amazon is deliberately turning into a shitty place to work to correct for overhiring. The most talented folks (who are the most Amazonian too) are first to look for the door because they can. Sign of the times? Intentional business decisions to reduce HC? Or side effect of terrible middle management? Really (really) doesn't feel like earth best employer. #AWS #Amazon
No, places like Roblox and Atlassian have taken nose dives. Amazon has been cruising at that level for decades.
It’s horrible. I’ve been desperately trying to leave but the market is so bad. I’ve never had an issue getting interviews before but now i am getting none. I feel so stuck, so stupid, and so depressed
I believe that is all of us that work at AWS
Everyone takes a nose dive. Shitty place just become worse.
Having worked at shittier companies, I can handle whatever is happenening in Amazon. My previous jobs were like sweatshops for developers.
Give us some company names so that we can stay away
Startups?
Amazon has always had a reputation of being the worst of the top tech employers. What's actually different now? Worst manager I ever had was ex Amazon and fit the stereotype.
Most big companies have absolutely killed their culture. It’s pretty sad really. I used to hear so many stories of how great it was working for FAANG companies and now they’re all so lame
Completely agree with OP. I have been at Amazon for 6+ years and can totally say that it feels very top-down now. Day-Two is finally here!
Same. Agree. 6+ years and the difference between now and the first two years that I was here is insane. It’s so much more top-down now and middle managers are only interested in managing upwards. Customer obsession out the door.
Do your part and get out of this mess. Otherwise you’ll be considered as complicit. TBH, most companies like mine don’t want to hire Amazon managers esp the ones that have a long tenure there. So take it as a friendly advice
What is URA & LE?
URA = Unregretted Attrition. We don't mind seeing you go. Target is 6% for all of Amazon (for sure at AWS anyway). LE is Least Effective. For AWS stack ranking that is usually around 8-10%. The 'recommended' number is lower, but management targets that. You are the bottom of the performance barrel relative to your peers. No RSU, go into focus. It's a pipeline to URA as well.
lol wasn’t it always a shitty place?
I was pretty happy there years ago. Maybe I was just naive. Or the company showed who it really was with the economic downturn.
