Women, help me understand why this is inspirational
I am a L5 DS at Amazon, and am considering applying for a DS position at Google. I did some research on LinkedIn on what the average profile for a Google DS looks like, and it seems to me like they all have PhDs, whereas I only have a Bachelor's in Engineering. Do I realistically have a chance to get into Google as DS? Or is their definition of Data Scientist different than Amazon's (e.g. Google Data Scientist = Amazon Applied Scientist)? Current TC: 200K (Seattle) YOE: 4
Eric Schmidt mentioned in an interview some time back that Google is an extension of graduate school. Probably why you see PhD credentials for senior DS
Google DS = Statistician from top PhD program and with strong maths and stats background.
Personally I admire that DS is elite at Google. At Meta, it’s just metric monkey work. I like that google differentiates their product analysts and data scientists. Because there should be a difference in the statistical rigor brought to problems. And questions like “what percentage of users X do Y?” is a waste of DS brain power.
Oh boy. Only in Google and Google only, DS means Phd in statistics.
