Job market is brutal for SWEs 🥲
Looking for insights on picking between the 2 offers. Amazon TC is without question higher, but JPMC work is more exciting. Curious to hear from Design/UX folks working at either company. My background: Principal Designer with 9 years of experience, most of it in enterprise design. Career spans a few different industries, notably AdTech for 4 years, and FinTech more recently. Dual degrees in design and computer engineering. Listing some pros and cons for the 2 offers, as I see it. Amazon Pros: Higher pay, opens doors for future big tech companies Cons: Dull design work (adtech), getting into management would take ~2 years JPMC Pros: Exciting job profile, cutting edge design work on the consumer banking app, potential to step into management right away Cons: Lower pay, all the red tape that comes with working at a bank Questions: Which opportunity sets me up for long term success/growth? Does taking one or the other limit my future mobility in any way? Is there any chance whatsoever of getting JPMC to throw in a sign-on bonus? #design #amazon #jpmorganchase
JPMC. L6 at Amazon is low ball for your experience. Design is dull and not appreciated at Amazon.
Not sure if design is appreciated more at JPMC
Having worked at jpmc as a ux designer I would not suggest it - lots of red tape and takes forever for development to get done
Better room to move around and work on more exciting work at amazon. This is a no brainer.
Agree. It will be more customer obsessed. You can switch teams easily as well if you find the work you’ll be doing on the current team boring.
Take the role at Amazon and then find a more interesting team after a few months. PM me if you want details of design culture here!
Banks have inflated VP titles and are known to be desperate with hiring UX. Low bar IMO Go with Amazon
(Not at PwC anymore) Bank is really slow, go for Amazon if you want to go for Tech industry.
I thought in banking world VP title is actually considered as a mid - senior level position?
Confirmed. It’s not Junior. And for most of the employees this is the highest level one can achieve.
Do Amazon for a couple years. It will probably suck for the most part, but the experience is invaluable. And, you might luck into an amazing team.
At Amazon, it's fairly easy to switch to another internal team/org that is more exciting. So you won't have to stay at AdTech for too long if it bores you. Keep in mind it is notoriously difficult to get promoted at Amazon, especially from L6 to L7 (Principal Designer). I would expect to be at the L6 level for your entire Amazon tenure, or at the very least 3-4 years. (Look up the "promo doc writing" process for more info on how promotions work at Amazon.)
can you share tc details please? i think it depends on your career goals. if management and experience solving complex problems and taking responsibility is your priority right now, the jp option seems pretty solid. if you’re looking to get more experience in a more widely respected and recognized company and you want to stay pure tech, not fintech or enterprise tools, amazon sounds better. plus, more tc and i think the levels of politics will be similar
