Why I Find Free Palestine Inspiring
Hello, I worked in the oil and gas industry and had a successful career over the past 13 years however, like many of my peers, I was laid off due to the double black swan of the oil and gas price war combined with the impact of COVID-19. I have decided to leave the constant up and down cycle of oil and gas, targeting tech jobs and specifically the Seattle area so that we can be closer to family to support our growing family. I have a L6 Non-Tech Program Manager virtual onsite interview coming up in two weeks and had quite a few questions that I can’t seem to find answers for. Any help would be very appreciated as this job would enable a great life change for my family. - If I have good examples from various positions showing that I understand and have used the leadership principles in real life examples – do those examples need to be specific to the type of role that I’m applying for? For example, I have an example of developing a product cost model showcasing ownership strongly – however I don’t see the development of a cost model as being an essential skill set for a program manager in this role – is it ok to use this example? - If I’m not sure which leadership principle specifically the interviewer is after and in answer, I give an example which strongly addresses other leadership principles, does this count against me quite a bit in the scoring? Will the interviewer try to guide me further as to which leadership principle he or she is trying to ask about? Is the interviewer testing specifically for the inclusion of one or two leadership principles and would ignore a strong example from one that they were not specifically reviewing? - My examples are coming to about 3 to 3 and a half minutes when spoken out at a moderate pace. I am including the specific situation, task, 3 examples of actions with sub points, and then results and lessons learned. Will the interviewer appreciate this level of detail or am I overdoing it and should lessen the content in favor of more stories? - Perhaps 75% of my examples are from one position which I held for three years and was by far the most relevant to the work I’d be doing at Amazon. I also have some examples from the two other recent positions I’ve held within the last five years. I’m concerned if the interviewing goes such that most of my examples come from this one position, it may look like I don’t have a wide variety of experience. I have 13 years of work experience and could dive further back for examples if needed. Thank you for any help! #tech TC: 200K YOE: 13
Well if you can get 200K from Amazon it's good because your salary is currently zero and once in tech you can jump. To another figure it this way you were at top of the pay band in O&G and it is dieing it will not return don't even think you will ever get a job back in this industry.
Thank you for the comments re: salary and level. This move is motivated more by family so, while those are important, they are secondary to the transition. At this point more concerned with getting in so any help along those lines would be greatly appreciated!
I feel for you this whole O&G is experiencing the worst time and it is in decline how fast is anyone's guess. I'm also looking outside not going to wait for it to crash. Will still need O&G for many years to come but it will keep getting smaller every year. Check fyi.levels for all tech salaries it will give the best data points for L6 salary at Amazon and read to understand the components of TC for Amazon it's a bit tricky
Coming in as l7 usually means you were director at other companies
Message me if you want help. I interviewed for an L6 PM role and was offered many other positions.
Did you except any of those roles? I got a L6 interview to can I DM you?
I also have a Senior Program Manager interview coming up. Hope it's fine to DM you.
How’d it go?
How did it go?
Did anyone get the role offered for SPM recently or on here
Yes I currently am a manager of sr pms
Sweet. I got a interview coming up for one in Seattle. I was more interested in TPM and Ntwk development mgr roles Can u comment on the scope and the money difference
$200k is about the total comp for l6 program manager. You will be making about the same but in a higher cost of living area. Also L6 program manager is not very high up. I have 12 or so yoe and recently made the move cross country. I thought it was higher up and I would be able to run a team and make decisions. Unfortunately l6 i found out is what new mba grads get offered. It’s disappointing to see mba grads with 1-2 yoe coming in at the same level making the same pay. I wouldn’t join again for less than l7
The problem of trying to perceive the relative level coming into a new company without objective evidence is surely difficult. Amazon carries a certain amount of weight and perhaps an expectation of down leveling from most other companies. From my understanding of the relevant levels, I would probably map into an L7 although I have applied to both positions and am not seeing movement on the other applications - I believe perhaps because of the interviews for this current one and the fact that the recruiter can see those and the idea that my resume was highly targeted toward this position. It will be an interesting experience potentially reporting to fresh out MBAs instead of the reverse if that ends up being the case.
