I'm expecting an offer from Amazon next week. I'd be an L7 Principal Product Manager reporting to another L7 (Senior Manager, Product Management) instead of an L8, which seems like a red flag. The recruiter mentioned this is actually pretty common at Amazon. Truth?
More common than not actually.
+1, it’s pretty normal.
It’s called Empire building They want to have multiple L7 to get promoted to L8 Best to watch your back.
+1 This is very common at Amazon in all job families.
PPM lol
Its very common. Amazon is very flat in terms of job levels given its a million+ employee company. But that's on paper coz in reality you get stuff like this. Don't feel too bad coz even some of Bezos's S-Team members report to S-Team members (i.e. SVPs reporting to SVPs) and these are folks who would be CEOs in any Fortune 100 company out there.
PPM is not a thing. Just say L7 PM
Yes. Very common. Amazon has perfected this where a L7 can report to L6 even. NOT A RED FLAG. Sr Mgrs also report to Sr Mgr, and directors reporting to directors. Everything works well at Amazon. Don't be worried about it. Also stop inventing acronyms!! PPM!
Uh I’ve never seen an L7 report to an L6. What are you talking about? That’s a sign that you “L7” need to look for a new job. L7 reporting to L7 is very common.
It happens in the engineering vertical. Not sure about PM.
