Is becoming a manager at Amazon career suicide? How hard is it to switch to another company? Due to the worst reputation in the industry and toxic culture, not many companies want ex-Amazon managers. I don't want to be stuck at Amazon forever.
I was a Manager at Amazon and never faced any issues. But I also knew that Management expectations at Amazon is vastly different than other places. As long as you lead by empathy, keep your tech skills up, you will be able to move forward.
Most Amazon managers are not bad. The PIP thing is bad (many companies have it, at Amazon it’s bad because it’s enforced 6%) but this isn’t being enforced by the manager.
I avoid Amazon managers when picking new teams/companies.
We actively avoid Amazon managers
One of the best managers I ever worked for was ex-Amazon but he wasn’t there long enough to learn how to be a big piece of shit.
This rumor should be a reminder that immaturity and hostility peaks in anonymous forums. No, you will not be limited in outside opportunities because you are an Amazon SDM. Think about how ridiculous it would be for recruiters to blacklist a former SDE 3, which every company wants to interview, just because they became successful in another role that required some similar strengths.
SDEs are not the one who have negative impression. Its SDMs.
Believe it or not, most SDEs like their managers. And the vast majority of our transitioned SDMs were SDEs.
