Amazon Non-compete

Amazon's employment contract says you can't join Amazon's competitors 18 months after leaving and everyone has to sign to be able to work at Amazon. What does it mean? Everyone is Amazon's competitor. So how do you get around it.

Can’t be enforced in California. Lol

Amazon Vulgar Feb 12, 2020

1) Unenforceable in California. 2) this is mostly for L8+ people. They don’t sure you if you’re a pissant IC, though they will walk your ass out of the building if they find out you’re going to Azure.

Vow so they sent it to L6 people. Is that a regular term on employment?

NVIDIA februarist Feb 12, 2020

Non compete is for everyone who works at Amazon. State of Washington allows it but it is usually not enforced, or Amazon will not sue in case you decide to join a competitor. This changes if you are a director or above.

If you resign on your own then it doesn't apply

Amazon diaosi2020 Feb 12, 2020

this is their way to make you falsely believe you are important to the company. wake up, they canot care less

Capital One hookie OP Feb 12, 2020

But is the non compete is given to L6?

Amazon diaosi2020 Feb 12, 2020

it is given to any sde, if you read carefully

VMware mqax77puta Feb 12, 2020

Even an L5 sde gets it... no one cares!

Amazon ATT89 Feb 12, 2020

It has been tightened up recently due to the WA state law adjustment. It only applies if you go to work on a competing product or service to the one you are working on.

Amazon ATT89 Feb 12, 2020

They can't just say you can't work at a "competitor".

Amazon lostboys Feb 12, 2020

This is standard contract for Amazon. I’m an L6. Hired a lawyer to help negotiate the terms. Amazon would not budge. If you want to work here, you sign it. Recruiter told me that they won’t prevent you from working so where else, but There have been cases where this was pursued.
