I am now in the middle of aws hiring process and reading about their pip culture (10% have to go each year) I think that's messed up and don't feel like continuing the process as I have never seen this happen at msft. Do you think I'm right?
You're right.
Ever since the day I joined I feared what you mentioned above. For me, none of that has happened across multiple teams I've been on. I'm more at peace these days after realizing how much empathy my managers have in general. My current manager is going on maternity leave and all of us and my skip manager are working together to make sure she stays updated and support her during this time. Everyone has a lot of empathy around here which I'm glad. Some others on the team have taken paternity leave and came back afterwards. Overall surprised that these few years were different than what I expected
How long have you been here? The first couple of years was a breeze even with racist team mates, but this time the manager change was bad
From my brief experience working at Amazon, i've met there some of the most evil sociopaths in my entire life. Developers, managers and HR included. There are good people there, but hey I'm sure that there are good people in prison as well - doesn't mean you should go there.
Personally, I would love to get piped to get the free money(severance). It’s not that difficult to get an offer in 3 months if you really are a good engineer.
Is it that bad?
Well, It depends on the team and the manager.
In same boat..thinking of declining the offer. This culture seems cut throat to me.. it will push people to do politics and your survival can’t be depend on how bad others are in your team/org.. Amazon must change..
Don’t bother. Not worth. I am staying here as I have big vests in 2021
Why not move to LinkedIn?
I applied and never heard back. plus I need visa sponsorship and amazon is the easiest to get that
Weird. MS and L both come under the same.umbrella, still? Is internal movement from MS to L not straightforward?
I think it's normal. I know some people say "hurr just be in the top 90% bro", but you can still be in the "top 90% bro" technically and get fucked over for political reasons. That said senior engineers are usually safer than junior from this (because firing them causes bigger upset in terms of productivity).
Feel lucky to be not employed at Amazon. At Amazon, managers quietly keep people on dev plan and surprise them with a PIP. Amazon has lot of shady managers. Not kidding.
Yes, I had a good time here for a couple of years, but the new manager is very biased and after 3 years I am worried when I would get PIPed, not worth the stress.. it’s not a fair process here
