Amazon Program Manager L5 salary

Posting for a friend- Amazon recruiter asked him to provide salary expectations right at the beginning of the process. He hasn’t even had a call with the recruiter/HM. Recruiter has given him a flat TC of 120k for this position (base, stocks, joining). He feels this is very low. How can he turn this conversation around and get wiggle room for negotiation. He is also actively looking for a job so he is worried if declining the offer will blacklist him with Amazon recruiters for similar opportunities

Location dependent. If seattle, can probably ask for 140.

It is Seattle and that’s why he feels he is being low balled. Any idea how he can steer the conversation in a direction where he can negotiate? He hasn’t even interviewed with the recruiter/ HM

Just say seems low but open to conversation after interviewing and then nail the interview. Will be hard to get 140 without interviewing well and getting strong hire from everyone But if 120 is too low and a hard no then he should look elsewhere in case they don’t budge much

I always tell them I'd like to discuss compensation after knowing more about the team if it is OK. Then after interview, research on level.fyi and negotiate if you get offer. Any negotiations before offer is useless...it also took away the attention from interview itself

Agreed but the recruiter didn’t budge and wanted a range. Now the recruiter has come back with a number which my friend feels is really low. How should he steer the conversation now? Any pointers? Also will saying no to one recruiter close the doors completely? Do they record such interactions for the candidates?

Recruiter usually is tied with the org/team. So unless he applied to exactly same team or so lucky had same recruiter on another team. Unlikely he would meet the same one. Also, numbers are from hiring manager, recruiter didn't have authority over it. If you don't want to proceed, you can kindly reject. But if you want to proceed and take a chance to negotiate higher number later, I would suggest to say "Thank you for getting the numbers for me. I'd really like to sit on it and get back to you later. But I think I can only make final decision after knowing the team through the interview if it is not impossible". I don't understand why he didn't budge. I feel like he messed up by getting the numbers from HM, without even interviewing yet. They usually ask for expectations but don't start the negotiations until later. Just believe one thing: don't give your numbers until he gave a drafted(first) offer.

Just research on level.fyi to evaluate. And also he is non-technical, it would be lower compare with technical.

Agreed on tech vs non-tech. Just feels he is being low balled.
