Amazon Research scientist

Hi all, I just received an email for Amazon recruter for a senior research scientist at Amazon Europe. How is different RS from Applied scientist a Amazon? What to expect in the interview? I didn’t discussed with the recruiter yet, but want to gather information about that role. Thanks for your help TC 70k, PhD + ~5 yoe

AS is at the top of the food chain. In theory: top notch education and research abilities + writing high quality code and ability to deliver software. RS: top notch education and research abilities. Lower pay. The rule is: always prefer AS. RS only if you can’t clear the coding bar for SDE1. The only RS I know are the ones who wished they were paid as AS for doing basically the same shit. Don’t assume anyone will bother explaining the difference while you interview. Your recruiter is told to fill a RS role so she will fill a RS role. Your hiring manager is filling a RS role so she will assume that’s what you want since you applied and spoke with the recruiter. Paradoxically - as always in life - driving the whole recruiting process is on you.

And what about system design? I am research scientist with no experience in system design. The RS pay is low, for how much?

AS is not SDE. I doubt you’ll get any SD questions outside the scope of building systems in your scientific domain of application. The pay is higher for AS. I am not at Amazon at this time. But rumor has it you are looking almost 1 band higher in certain cases.
