Recruiter from Amazon reached out to me and said i would be a good fit for either L6 Sr. Engineer or SDM role. Can someone from Amazon help me differentiate between these roles. Is Sr. Engineer considered to be equivalent to Staff/Lead Engineers at other companies?
Senior engineers at Amazon are like demi gods
If they are good
Compensation?
TC of SDE > SDM at the same level
It's the other way round. I know few engineers who got a 10% bump when they moved from sde to sdm.
My manager also confirmed that sdms get more pay due to added responsibilities
Thank you for all the information. Any tips on how i can prepare for the intetview?
If you have management experience, SDM interview process is more forgiving than Sr. SDE process. If you are truly a career engineering IC in big tech you will probably do better with Sr. SDE. If you have been in smaller companies, leading teams, etc., go for the SDM role.
How easy is it to switch to SDM from Sr. SDE at Amazon?
One is IC role another one is management position with little opportunity to code. Comp wise not much difference. 5-10k more for sdm
More like 20-30k more
