[posting for a family member as they couldn't register on blind] My wife works for Amazon Music as SDET. Her role got impacted recently. Unfortunately, this happened just before she got promoted. She was rated outstanding during the last promo cycle and was in promo discussions. She got a couple of months to search for alternatives internally. She was trying for all kind of jobs internally. Unfortunately there is a big number of SDEs that were part of restructuring in Alexa and gaming recently that increased the competition for internal roles. One manager considered her for the SysDev role. Completed interview process which went well. Question is, how good is the sysdev role compared to SDE and SDET roles ? #layoff #amazon #severance
Plenty of open roles at TikTok / Bytedance - DM for a referral
I was a Sys dev before converting to SDE. It totally depends on the team If team has support engineers + Sys devs then it should me mostly OE work, if its SDEs+Sysdevs then it's mostly development and OE. I would say It's not a bad option.
I work with a lot of SysDevs and their role and scope vary wildly by team. They’re supposed to focus on infra and tooling but more often than not I see them being used in the same capacity as an SDE. They make about 15% less than SDE. If the alternative is to get laid off then I’d take it and keep looking for other roles.
Thank you @eJBq93 I agree. She is trying to be prepared with the right expectations.
