Looking at joining AWS in a non swe/ marketing role, L7, coming from MSFT. Trying to understand reward and compensation opportunities at Amazon. At MSFT, there was a pretty defined reward range for performance. Is there a comparable practice in place at Amazon? I’ve heard rewards are all over the map, true? And are Amazon rewards doles out in the 5, 15, 40 method like on-hire awards?
Bonuses only apply in niche places and to niche people. Don't expect anything other than what is promised.
Amazon is just base + sign on bonuses (paid out fairly evenly over 2 years in your normal paycheck) + your rsu’s, vesting at the schedule above, but not until month 13. Levels.fyi should tell you comp ranges in marketing for your experience (years, not levels)
There’s no rewards. You get what you are offered. 15% of stock grown is backed in. Then it’s up to your manager to give you more RSUs, if you are doing well, but fall out of the compensation guidelines for your level.
Thanks, can you give me an idea of what the compensation guidelines are for the levels? For my annual rewards at Microsoft I got about 59k cask, 120 in Rsus. Just trying to gauge overall comp in, say year 2, and beyond
You will get an offer and that’s your guideline. If you work well, your manager will try to keep your compensation at the same level by occasionally adding RSUs and giving slight base increases. First two years you earn mostly cash, so stocks don’t matter much. Then to keep your compensation at offer level Amazon stock has to grow at least 15% per year. If it doesn’t, your manager can add RSUs to close the difference. Or not, depending on how things go. As an ex-Microsoft, I do not recommend joining Amazon. I’m personally planning to go back. The culture here is everything bad from Ballmer’s era Microsoft and nothing good. For example, you have just two sick days per year. Your 401k match doesn’t start until three years. Your office attendance is monitored like you are in a kindergarten. It’s just a bad place to work at. First year you will probably get a middle of the band rating and mediocre additional RSUs, if any. Second year you would have to backstab your peers to look better than them in comparison when management stack ranks people. If you succeed you get better RSUs, if you lose in the game of thrones you get piped a few months before you get your 2 year vest. Then rinse and repeat until you lose the backstabbing game, or burnout, etc.
