Hi, I have an L5 offer with Amazon and yo make sure I am choosing the right team, I have spoken to HM. He mentioned that there is no URA in his org for the last 2-3 years (he joined 2 years back), both EM and QA also participate in on-call. Also, he seems to limit the working hours to ensure people are not burning out. This is a team in Alexa. In my current team at Adobe, my manager goes on-call and I thought he is an exception as he is still curious about tech. Curious, how common is it for QA and EM to participate in oncall at Amazon ? TC: 220 New TC: 330
For the uninitiated- what’s URA?
Did you ask him about URA directly? How can you be sure manager is telling the truth about ura or pip?
I can never be certain.
I asked this exact thing during my interview. Manager’s response was “we can’t discuss internal policies and evaluation details with you. But we are a data driven company and we have to collect a ton of data for any decision”. What I heard “we document everything you do and use it according to our need”.
Doesn't really matter just get in then transfer if needed. Once you are on the inside it is easy to transfer and vet teams.
Yoe? Its a great offer. U can change team from day 1.
pm me the manager id. I'll look at his techsurvey
Also try looking at his teams oncall rotation, number of sev2s they receive per month and help op with the oncall frequency too? 😬
I have never see QA and EM participate in oncall
Rule 1 to join Amazon : Never Trust you manager !
I don’t think there is any org with no URA
And on call ? I am particular about it as I never liked Ops work.
If the manager is being dishonest, you are truly f..ed op. Also, all orgs of size 50 have URA, and then it's tracked for VPs. Don't think there is any way around URA for any time. Also, coming from Adobe the culture, on-call load and pressure is going to hit you like a tonne of bricks
