I got a call for business intelligence engineer position The hr emailed me and asked when I'm available for 1st round of interview , I sent my time slot and they sent me Amazon chime link, during the interview the interviewer asked tell me about yourself etc.. I was asking questions like whats the salary range, Remote or on-site after covid etc... suddenly that person cut my conversation and opened a sql editor and asked me to write sql query .. I asked him so the hr will oly check sql knowledge? That person told I'm the tech lead 🥴 I was surprised 😮 and told i was not informed that the first round is technical interview the recruiter asked me when I'm available so I thought like every other company the HR calls to screen the candidates. That person was lil annoyed 😒 I guess .. he said, so what .. can't you write a sql query now ? I said I haven't prepared let me just try.. there was 3 sql questions.. I got 1st query correct ( a basic join and not null conditions query) 2nd was pretty difficult it was like calculate median and 30th percentile of a salary without using inbuilt functions I tried but since I was not prepared or knew it was technical interview I asked him how to proceed , ( sometimes interviewers guide a bit or provide hints like start like this.. etc.. ) he didn't answer anything he was just quite 🤐 Me: after 5 mins I asked him can I Google? That person was like no try it yourself.. Me : again after 5 mins of thinking & trying, I can Google and get the solution for this query I don't know to do it..🙆♂️ He : 🤨😕 try it yourself🧟♂️ If you can't come up with an answer on your own for problems like this I don't know how will you handle the situation everyday . Now I got a little pissed 😤 I told if you are stuck when a task is given, will you keep thinking how to solve on your own or check stack overflow to quickly find the answers?🤨 That person got full angry 😠 😤 he was like this is an interview 😑 I'm testing your knowledge...🧐 I also got annoyed since his tone was high 😬... I told you are testing whether I know what you know.. I am sure I can ask a question that you can't answer.. its a challenge..💪 He disconnected the call 📞 lol 😆 I guess that person might read this post 🤣 Anyways .... thats my experience I got PIP even before getting hired 🤪 #interview #amazon #e-commerce #retail * ****EDIT******* People telling me I should have know that first round is technical interview, check this screen shot,.. no where it says it will be a technical / coding round. There was an option to join via mobile as well... so if I had taken the interview call via mobile would I be coding on mobile 📱? 🤔
Lol dude I stand with you
For which office was it? Wonder why you didn’t disconnet sooner than him :D
Well narrated with matching emojis...nice lol
I wish more candidates were like you, makes it little bit easier for the rest of us.
OP sounds like a candidate with better options than wasting his time 😂.
That reminds me of Apple interview. Interviewer: can you write full syntax of find to find duplicate IMEI numbers in the given log file. Me: Can I write pseaudo code? Interviewer: No. Your syntax should work without any errors. That's how I ended up in Rally
That’s an easy enough question... it’s just wrapped in a business case that makes it seem more intimidating than it is. Should be a simple O(n) solution. In the nicest way possible if that overwhelms you then it’s probably for the best that you found a place that fits you better.
It's not algorithms. Command line syntax for find.
So, is that a no from amazon?
OP should probably create a separate post with a poll saying "Will I get an offer?".
I was wondering what would have happened if it was in person interview instead of chime 🤔
Telephone rounds are meant for screening such candidates, so they don’t waste everyone’s time in in-person rounds. Op- I am sure you did your best, and your argument is valid. But if you were that good in sql then you wouldn’t be needing to google the logic. Personal experience- When I interviewed, I came up with a totally wrong syntax but my logic was right and I also explained my thought process. Turned out, that’s what the Interviewer wanted to see.
This kind of behavior by interviewer can get him/her in trouble. For SDEs, it is clear that you should give the best possible experience even if you are inclined to not hire someone. Even if you say "you are testing what you know" the interviewer should handle such situations in a polite way! Disconnecting call is unprofessional from Amazon
Easy to say! Everyone at Amazon has a ton of other things to do than to put up with such ‘candidates’. While I partly agree on being unprofessional by directly disconnecting the call thing but then... Sure! Why not! Why waste time being polite and argue to prove your point when you can easily disconnect, black list, get rid of them and spend time with a deserving candidate. Plenty of fishes in the sea.
Because people we're interviewing are our customers too. Did you not take Making Great Hiring Decisions?
Yes. Get approval from anonymous people on the internet.
Were you the interviewer?! 🙃
Lmao. Pointless interview. Everyone knows devs use stackoverlow all day lol
What amazes me is that stackoverflow was implemented without being able to use stackoverflow.
