Are there any possible warning signs for new grads that could mean they were hired just to fire for pip quotas? I had to pass a 3 round on-site to get my offer and they are giving me a 22k signing bonus. Does that make it less likely that I was hired just to get fired? I'm excited to join Amazon but I think I might be reading too many blind posts about pip culture. TC : 180K YOE: 0 Loc: Austin SDE1 edit: Rip didn't expect this to make it to front page of blind. I will update whether or not I get pipped in 3 months and then again at my 1 year lol.
Your intuition is most likely correct. There are always exceptions but most I. Your cases, end up like that
Location?
Don’t read blind until 2 YoE.
They will give u impossible project to complete and when u can’t deliver, will pip u in a snap of fingers. You are just a resource for them nothing else
How impossible could that get?🤔won't there be enough resources to tackle the challenge?
Ok let’s take up a hypothetical scenario - you have a system in place it has a current TPS of 10, now you are presented with a requirement which needs 500 TPS in your system or a new system needs to built in your sister team which does the most of load shedding. Mind you this system has been designed by tenured engineers. Let me know how will u solve it ?
What's the clawback time on the signon. Tbh 22k sounds like itd still be counter productive to hire you and fire you. It's probably around that much or more to higher a new candidate. Never worked for AMZN tho
Felt the same way. Just about my entire intern cohort was hired. Will not be too specific but it was for a tech role that's not as high bar as dev. Many people were struggling with the basics. It felt like they hired to fire.
So since I have an SDE role I should have slightly better job security?
Uhm no that's not what I meant. I was just empathizing with you. I know what you mean when you say you fear they hired to fire. Unless you work for the government or are a tenured professor, I think the best/only job security is your skill set no matter the industry. It may not keep you a job at a specific company because lay offs/pip etc. but as long as you have indisputable skills you will always be able to find work hence *job security*
Don’t read into the negativity. Just read the people around you (mostly management) and ask probing questions to how you can better improve yourself. Generally if you show interest and you aren’t horrible it’ll be fine.
Blind is a cesspool of negative comments, I wouldn't read too much into it. Congratulations! Just go enjoy your job and do your best and try to learn as much as possible because the name Amazon on your resume will open many windows in the future.
Everyone is hire to fire. Just make sure you get your 2 year vest at least.
Yeah I really just want to survive the 2 years
Dm if you need advice.
