Just joined as SDE2 and getting paid 300k+ a year. My previous job post a lot of interesting challenges so I expected the same at Amazon. What I got is all brainless work, all operations, no innovation. 90% of time just follow the runbook. It’s so easy my cousin in high school could do the job. What happened to frugality? Hiring SDE2 and senior SDE with high TC just to do easy operations work doesn’t sound frugal to me. I know we’re supposed to take ownership and improve things so operations are easier, but if the previous engineers actually did that, why are we having so much operations to do? Golden recipe is create new thing, harvest impact and leave to avoid doing the boring maintenance work. New SDEs has to hold the bag and do the operations because the people that created the service all fucking left to avoid the operation. I don’t mind doing the brainless job because of the high TC but I am already bored. Going to leave as soon as I bag the TC for 1-2 year. Should’ve went with my Google offer with slightly less TC, they might be boring too but at least they don’t expect engineers to do ops work
do chill man or do LC and leave.
Isn't this how most tech is supposed to be?
When I was working at previous company I got to do a lot of interesting work
How much money did your earlier company make and how necessary was innovation to keep that revenue coming? Now ask the same questions about your team/product within Amazon. At the end of the day, a company pays you wht it thinks is necessary to keep growing. If it think cleaning manure is worth 500k a year, it will find someone who does it for 200k
You shouldn't be feeling this way at Amazon...PIP coming?
I don’t give a f, I was top tier IC in my previous company and I cleared 80% of my FAANG interviews. I can get a job as soon as I step out of the door
I love your confidence. Keep it up!!
Can’t wait to be like you later this month. Joining soon
TC?
You are low balled, Amazon pays 400k for sde2 roles now
Meh at least I make a lot more than internal promoted sde2 who have worked their ass off for it
That’s a lie
The frugality is paying people that internally promote to L5 200k. Good thing I get 3 extra RSU's.... 2 years from now.
And a raise at annual rewards cycle which new employees will not be eligible for
You generally don't get a raise your first year after being promoted. My time line for my next raise is the same as a new hire.
Can anyone refer me to any of the FAANG. PM/Lead Agile roles?. 12+ yrs of Experience
I can to MSFT or AMZN
Op, thanks for the post! I am considering between high Amazon offer vs fb vs G. I was exactly thinking about this ops heavy experience at AWS with high tc vs interesting team at G. Do you mind sharing how much difference was between your G and Amazon offers?
Around 60k
Man...you left G in favor of Amazon for 60k ? You deserve that ops work for such a crazy decision. By the way, if you are not writing code and delivering feature, you are going to be an easy target for PIP to fulfil quota, they won't care wether there was opportunity or not to write the code or what contributions you made to Ops, they will use your number of lines of code to justify you for PIP
bro this is so shitty for a new grad like me
Yeah, you're nut gonna be new grad from couple of years from now. Ask for development tasks.
i do get dev tasks but the amount of ops work we have is stupid
Every company and job will have all sorts of work and somebody has to do it. If you are not interested then just leave. I don’t see any reason to complain :-S ? I’m confused here ..
Every company has somebody that does the fun job too, why aim at the boring ones
You will enjoy more in a mid size or startup company. Big once are bets, you may end up with similar boring work.
