Asking for my brother He joined Amazon a few months ago. He regrets his decision now. Does he have to return his sign on bonus if he leaves within a year? most tech companies give u a sign on bonus lumpsum and you’re supposed to return it if you leave before the year completes. I hear the bonus at Amazon comes every paycheck so do u have to return money that’s already been paid to u?
For most ppl they get the first year’s bonus in his first paycheck. He’ll have to return some if he leaves early
It's prorated for the one you get every pay cheque, you get to keep whatever has already been given. I'm not sure how the lump sum one works. In my offer there was no lump sum. Relocation was prorated over 2 years. It's all in the offer letter.
That will be written in the contract
If the bonus is paid out monthly, it’s considered earned as soon as it’s paid out
No. The bonus is divided up to 24 months and is his to keep if he decides to leave.
He doesn't have to return a dime if it's paid monthly (for me it was). But check regarding the relocation lump sum, if he chose that
First year was lump sum for me and second was monthly. For first year you have to return the remaining. You are okay in year 2
Should we pay back the pre-tax, or what's deposited to our account
Pre tax unfortunately
Also note, usually if you're asked to repay anything it'll be pre-tax so if it's a large bonus he'll have to dip into his savings. The difference will come back in his next tax return.
I'd ask him to check his offer letter
