Has anyone done it before? Is it possible? Edit: Currently a strong L5 (TT) at Amazon. I was offered promotion review in Q4 but passed on it due to temporary personal situation which demanded more time off work. I am putting my doc for promotion in upcoming quater with a high chance of getting it. I know for a fact that a strong L5 can get E5 and I know a colleague from previous team who was L6 for a year and got a call for E6 interview. Just curious if one can interview at L5 or maybe a few months after getting to L6? TC : 220k (L5) YOE : 4.5 post grad + 2 years before that
It is totally doable. I’ve done it. Facebook has much less emphasis on leadership skills as compared to Amazon. I can easily see how some of the E6s here would map to solid L5s if interviewed at Amazon. And that is the same reason E6s here are usually down-leveled when they move to Google. It is a hacking culture that just does not fully grasp what technical leadership means.
Wtf, you know Amazon L5 is actually E4 here, right?
No, that is simply not true. From a skillset and leadership perspective, L5 at Amazon can be viewed as a wide band that maps easily to both E4 and E5 at facebook. And from time to time, a high-performing L5 at Amazon can map to E6. I am talking here from perspective of skillset, not compensation or direct ladder rungs mapping.
Amazon L5 is SDE II right? Then no fucking way...Amazon L5 will be leveled as E4 at facebook..no exception...if you have more than 6 years of experience and you are still an SDE II at Amzn, then recruiter will have hard time even juatifying an E4 offer
Someone on my team went from L5 to E5 which is an uplevel but jumping two levels seems unlikely
Only if you are very under leveled at amazon
I’m sure it’s possible but seems very unlikely. Getting E5 at fb will be hard enough for most amazon L5s
Why not fb l7
It seems Facebook has guidelines not to let l5 interview for E6. You will have hard time fighting to get interviewed. Yeah guideline is Amazon L6 with at least 3 years in that role. Let me know if you have more information about it
Updated the post. Amazon L6 with one year of experience can get interview call for E6. It's difficult to crack but doable. I know this but don't know if someone with two to three months as L6 can get a call for E6 or not.
Listen, you're an sde2 at amazon, and just like all the other SDE2s at amazon who have been there for 4 years (likely stock fully vested) you think just because your manager hasn't PIP'd you yet you think your an sde3 and deserve a new stock refresh. Sorry wrong. Amazon breeds a culture of being a yes man and throwing others under the bus to further your career. That is not how any other tech company operates except possibly msft or Google, try them first. I personally know E5s at fb who are so much better than SDE3s at amazon its scary to think what the SDE2s at amazon actually do all day. FB is a coding company, you build stuff that works in production under any and all conditions with zero guidance or your pip'd. That is the expectation of an E4 at fb on his or her first day once they are assigned a team. Stay at amazon, put together your promo doc full of fake design docs put in place for the purpose to get you promoted, list all the tickets you resolved that due to incompetence should have been fixed before ever hitting production and be prepared to be a corp slave for your manager once your promo is rejected.
Expections can be set at any levels, there is no benchmark for that. Doesn't matter how good a software engineer is, the code will fail in production for some conditions. It's a stupid statement or if true a hostile working culture. People needs to work in a team and new people at any levels needs guidance. Amazon has a culture of delievring scarrpy code which works for the planned time and then a new one is always getting developed. That makes a lot of tickets because whole ecosystem is changing all the time. So this is not because people are dumb
@uberblack You clearly don't have any idea about Amazon or Facebook. Relax! Keep doing the "amazing" work.
Trust me, even if you in as 6 somehow, you wont survive.
