Amazon to Google compensation

Google swe offer for MTV (after all negotiation) tc: ~220k (133k+15%+$270k stocks). “senior” L3. Interesting team. Currently L4 (about to move to L5 next quarter mostly) with 1.5yr experience+Masters+1.5yr foreign experience. Current tc ~140k (Seattle). I would probably make slightly more base than offered after promotion. Current work and manager are also not bad. Is the offer good enough to make the switch? How fast can people jump from L3->L4?

There is nothing called senior L3. Be prepared to get your ass kicked by fresh undergrad l3

Amazon lgfD77 OP Jul 18, 2018

I know haha. But that’s how they’re trying to sell it to me.

Amazon tuhghkgn Jul 18, 2018

If it makes you feel any better, sde 2 at Amazon and I accepted Google L3 offer.

Google cv51th Jul 18, 2018

High cost of living and extra taxes in MTV would make that more like 180 vs 140. But you can go L3 to L4 in 1-1.5 year, which can move your tc to ~250-280K. Even better would be to take the offer but to stay in Seattle. There's plenty of room in Google Sea/Kir.

Amazon lgfD77 OP Jul 18, 2018

I guessing they would adjust the offer for Seattle accordingly?

Google cv51th Jul 18, 2018

AFAIK, they only adjust the base, and by a small amount.

Amazon sos567 Jul 18, 2018

Even after promotion, I would say Google TC would be higher than promoted L5 TC. As its Cali, adding extra taxes and higher cost of living both TC are really close. Your decision would mostly depend on how you like current work vs Google team

Facebook GoogI Jul 18, 2018

Forget about promo to L5 at G with your yoe.

Amazon lgfD77 OP Jul 18, 2018

Nor am I expecting that :)

Google 🕷e Jul 18, 2018

There is nothing called Senior L3. Being underlevelled becomes frustrating and will bite you in a couple of years. Tell them you would circle back when Google is willing to consider you for L4!

Google HighBall Jul 18, 2018

It's likely that your future teammates are underleveled L4's with 10 YoE and fresh grad L3's from MIT/Stanford/Berkeley who know about the latest ML/AI trends and are willing to work 60 hours a week.

Amazon Jabberwook Jul 19, 2018

Sounds like fun. Amazon is mostly the same though. Industry hires are mostly unhappy underleveled L5s, and our L4s are hardworking top CS grads, just one notch less top than the ones at Goog.
