Does anybody have an opinion on moving from Amazon to Walmart? The comp seems better but at the end of the day you work for Walmart. Amazon seems more innovative, dynamic, multiple business lines, better upside in the stock. Any opinions here for a Product Manager with 7 YOE. TC: 260k
Are you an L6 PM? Technical or non technical ?
Non tech
Did Walmart to Amazon and couldn’t be happier. Walmart can not decide whether they want to be in store retail focused or put efforts into online growth. Caused a lot of back and forth. Perhaps they finally put a stake in the ground and caught up to the rest of the world.
How did you get the interview call? I have been applying - all declined. I have 7 YoE too , looking for product roles
same with me can't get an interview. Which sucks because most ex-amazon engineers would probably be super passionate about taking amazon down
“passionate about taking Amazon down” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Moved to WMT from Amazon as a PM and happy so far. At Amazon, the PMs own the PM function AND the business. Not only you own the roadmap but you also own the business performance. At WMT, you own the roadmap, but business decisions are usually taken in partnership with Business teams. So the responsibility is shared, which results in less stress, less escalations, less spotlight. At WMT PMs are a function to support the business, similarly to what PgM and Marketing do at Amazon. PMs teams yield more power at Amazon. But this additional responsibility has its pros and cons. At WMT there is not as much mobility. You are supposed to stay 18 months in your role. I think its key that you arrive at the right level and the right role at WMT. I would not entertain an offer for less than Principal or Sr Manager.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you mind sharing which location did you join Walmart in? Also what is YoE? Is there a minimum product management experience required for a sr manager role at Walmart?
Happy to share via DM.
Do it
Its a politics riddled company, much worse than AMZN in pay, brand, work. But you can stick around longer by doing nothing, as long as you attend different meetings. PM here have no vision and just do program management. Its a dianasour, but may have some good pockets. They also layoff people, but don't announce publickly. Lately stock has done well, so thats a +ve. Is less cut throat than AMZN, but very difficult to get anything done. I'll avoid 0 branding and will have tough time to join FAANG after this!
I agree that Walmart is good for coasting - especially if you have a good/senior role. Ideally a role in management. Layoffs did happen a few years ago, but that was mostly because they realized they were not going to be able to compete with Amazon in e-commerce and started trimming tech headcount. Experimental ventures that didn’t work out also ended in layoffs. But I wonder how likely it is for that to happen again. And you can certainly join a FAANG company from Walmart. I was at Walmart for over 4 years and saw many move to FAANG.
Any company is way way better than shitty Amazon A**hole.
You need to experience more of the real world of employment then
Our org is hiring en masse from Amazon and in turn bringing in a lot of the toxicity. Leadership has no vision other than yell, harass and bully people into endless hours of work and a yes sir esp for those on H1b. They constantly get abused and I’ve heard feedback of being burnt out and low morale. It’s likely nothing different from Amazon. You may want to check your leadership chain to see where they are from before you sign that offer. Our leadership also couldn’t contain themselves when they see Amazon on a candidates resume, like dangling a t bone in front of a lion that hasn’t eaten for a week
This ^
Can I DM you for Walmart referral?
Walmart is becoming more like the Amazon 10 years ago, and Amazon is becoming more like the Walmart 10 years ago. I would say this would be a great move!
Haha not sure about the comparison. But should be a good move nonetheless.
What a bad comparison
Worked at Walmart E-commerce (Engineering) for 4+ years. A lot depends on the team/org. Look up the org/chain of management - what’s their background? Have they been at Walmart forever? As long as the team is fresh, enthusiastic, and motivated - life is great no matter where you go. When you join a team/project that’s stale, boring, cost-centric, been around forever, full of organizational politics, things won’t be fun.
Do you think it’s difficult to move into another tech company though after going from Amazon to Walmart? Say Uber or Lyft
But the Walmart leadership will eventually stifle any type of innovation. Either they stick and play e game or leave
