Amazon vs Bloomberg vs Microsoft

Evaluating a job offer from Bloomberg NYC Senior Software Engineer: 160k base + upto 25k target bonus Guaranteed 80% of bonus for year of 2019 YOE: 2 How is the base growth at Bloomberg every year and the usual target bonus percentage in general? How much more can I negotiate with Bloomberg? Have an offer for SDE2 L5 Amazon Seattle, yet to discuss TC. Offer from Microsoft Seattle, SDE1 L60, 167k TC

"Senior" with 2 YOE 🤔

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

Apparently Bloomberg has flat structure and most of them start at Senior Engineer who have some yoe. Not a big deal though for me. Work and TC is more imp than title.

Thermo Fisher Qwerty837 Nov 6, 2018

It seems like everyone i’ve met at Bloomberg is senior eng. i got interviewed by a fresh college grad there that was senior. 🤔

Bloomberg TghbeUG23 Nov 6, 2018

It's usually 3+ years experience before someone is named a senior

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

Feel the same, everyone is senior haha

Bloomberg TghbeUG23 Nov 6, 2018

If you do even average, you'll get 100% of your target bonus every year and 5%ish TC raises year over year. Do very well and you'll get 10%+. I've gotten 12-17% raise (TC) each year

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 7, 2018

What is the TC I can negotiate up to?

Bloomberg TghbeUG23 Nov 7, 2018

185k is pretty good for 2 yoe. Only way to get higher would be have competing offers and the team really wants you

Google Groogle Nov 6, 2018

Microsoft > Amazon > Bloomberg

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

Basis on reputation?

Google Groogle Nov 6, 2018

Yes, also wlb, benefits, quality of people. Amazon is better than Bloomberg in terms of compensation and brand. It is worse in all other aspects

Microsoft Timon Nov 6, 2018

How was your Amazon interview?

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

Best out of all 3

Microsoft Timon Nov 6, 2018

I mean what was the difficulty level compared to others?

Add msft breakdown

Microsoft gfba68 Nov 6, 2018

The money will go further in Seattle than in NYC. NYC is a cooler city, though. It seems like you may have been underleveled at MSFT compared to the other two, which probably means a quick promotion.

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

I thought the same

Microsoft Kik Nov 6, 2018

Amazon l5 will be the best for tc and career. You can switch to Microsoft at 62/63 in a year to reclaim wlb. L5 maps to 62/63.

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

Thanks

Amazon LEETCODE🙃 Nov 6, 2018

Fake news. Tc is only better when you stay longer than 3 years. Sde 2 might map to L62/L63 but also note that this is interview performance dependent; which didnt really play in your favour this time

Bloomberg iVX372 Nov 6, 2018

You should be able to negotiate all offers upwards once you have the Amazon offer numbers. Bloomberg commonly offers $200k TC to people with 2 YOE and strong competing offers

Commvault Gtalk Nov 6, 2018

i have an onsite with bloomberg. Whats the expected salary for 10+ exp. My expectation 250+. Please share your views.

Bloomberg iVX372 Nov 6, 2018

You can get at least that much. IC SWE TC tops out around $300k, but you'll need strong competing offers to get that

Microsoft dKWp30 Nov 6, 2018

Is MSFT willing to budge on the level if AMZN is leveling you as a SDE2?

Egencia lazy_lad OP Nov 6, 2018

Nope, next promotion cycle crap

Microsoft dKWp30 Nov 8, 2018

That’s not a guarantee. If AMZN is offering you SDE2, take it and try to survive there for a while. MSFT will think that you’re performing and give you a higher level. My group hired a SDE1 from AMZN 3 years ago and he joined as a SDE2. No joke. Plus you’ll learn a ton at AMZN.
