Crossed a line with my boss
I wanted to get some people's ideas on the pros/cons of choosing amazon vs. doordash. For more information I would be in Seattle at AWS with 185k TC or in SF at Doordash with 195k. For salary breakdown: AWS: 128k base 50k bonus ~6k stock (111k vested over 4 years 5/15/40/40) Doordash 135k base 20k bonus 40k stock (100k vested over 4 years 40/30/20/10) I'm unsure about the stock refreshers or potential growth of AWS (seems like a mature company) or Doordash (seems like the business model is questionable) I have internship experience at AWS and like my mentor/team there but I was working on reliability and it was not my thing imo. I have no idea where Doordash would place me and honestly am unsure why Doordash hired so many new grads. I am also wary that I have two options that just aren't particularly great in terms of WLB :/ I think I am trying to optimize for learning as well as getting my foot in the door for the next job, but also WLB is important factor as well. any pros/cons that you guys have would be super helpful! What were the coding questions asked in the interviews ?
DoorDash won’t last long
Can you explain more on that?
That’s funny coming from a rivian guy. How are rivian’s financials looking these days?
DoorDash has much worse wlb than Amazon
I’d pretty easily take Amazon here. DoorDash WLB on average is probably not all that much better than Amazon, and I’d rather have the Amazon RSUs
Man harsh words on Doordash. I think like Amazon your WLB depends a lot on your team. Personal experience at Doordash is that it is a good place to learn and you get a lot of opportunities to grow fast if you perform well. I had great mentorship in my time here. Consider what projects you'd likely work on in either role, which one more aligns with your career direction? Can you ask Doordash what types of team and projects you can work on? Geography matters a little too, SF is a better tech job/networking market but frankly your $195k in SF might not go as far as $185k in Seattle. As a lifelong SF native I'm biased to say SF >> Seattle in terms of lifestyle, but I've never been a new grad in Seattle. Congrats on two competitive offers regardless, you have an enviable choice.
Thank you! Unfortunately for Doordash they tell me my team after I commit. Do you know why Doordash is hiring so much? I'm curious on what you think the next avenue of growth is for the company
There's nothing too interesting about the hiring from an insider perspective, last year Doordash didn't have a layoff like many other companies were doing but it did slow hiring from what I could tell. That means we are a bit short our ideal headcount. To be honest there are new business lines and geographies for expansion, just doing what we do more efficiently and continue to steadily eat market share does a lot too. I think Amazon clearly is the bigger and more diversified business, but neither is on the verge of collapse or the moon so who knows how stock shakes out. In your shoes I would focus most about what I could learn at the new role and how it sets me up for my career, realistically early career SWE usually don't stay too long in their first roles. It sounds like you dont love the work you did at Amazon, so maybe that isn't for you. I obviously chose DD and SF, but I really think either is a strong start to a career
Any day Amazon over DoorDash. In these economic times, it’s no brainer to pick larger company with wide range of business footprints.
Can not go wrong with either because they are good for first job. Next level is also good Btw, as new grad, you should not aim for wlb. You should learn as much as you can then reach to next level then jump ship for better wlb
A good problem to have. I worked at Amazon for 6 years and had an offer from DoorDash that I declined for my current role, here’s my take: Amazons current offer is better as a new grad (185k in Seattle > 195k in SF) and will be a more stable job and stock. DoorDash is more likely to provide faster career growth since a) they have more level granularity (more so that Amazon has less than the industry avg) and b) it’s less over-resourced than many parts Amazon. The stock and job security are more high risk high reward. You mentioned DoorDash hired a lot of new grads recently which could be a double edged sword. You can make some great life-long friends when you work with people around your age but you will compete with each other to an extent. Amazon seems to be hiring less new grads as they used to and everyone older will be too busy playing the game of thrones to be your friend.
From what I’ve heard 2nd hand DoorDash is even worse than AWS. But like you point out DoorDash is still a money loser
What have you heard?
