I need to decide for a Data Science role between Amazon and Expedia. Expedia - 200k Amazon - 260k We are trying to have our first baby, in early thirties. While Amazon is a lucrative breakthrough for career, worried about WLB, PIP culture at Amazon. Any female's prgnancy experience at amazon is highly appreciated. YOE: 8+ Female TC: 160k
Can you do a TC breakdown of both and add level please? Also when you say Data Science.. Data Scientists at Expedia are more like Product Analyst and barely any ML. For ML, we have Machine Learning Scientist track. WLB at Expedia is way better than Amazon. PIP is almost non existent. Given that you are trying your first baby.. it would be a better experience at Expedia at the cost of 40k in TC.
I'am a DS building pricing models for an Airline. I really appreciate Expedia's business model & would be very interested in applying for that Machine learning scientist track in the future. If you have any advice, it would be very much appreciated.
If you are hired as a Data Scientist. Then there is an internal application to convert into MLS. Best to speak to the manager or your sister ML team manager
And its fully paid ..
If you have to select between the two .. Not to take anything from Expedia .. Expedia is not at the league of Amazon when it comes to pay and Resume value .. If you have contacts then Resume value can be subsidized but Amazon would beat Expedia hands down when it comes to money,Tech & Value .. Personally if people don’t have FAANG exp I would recommend them to get one before turning down the FAANG offer .. (include microsoft too.)
DO NOT join Amazon
Strong experience?
Why @amzn? I just joined and am enjoying it
Also depends if your spouse also has a high paying, high demand job. If yes, please steer clear of Amazon. 60k difference over the year probably would not matter much. You have got a really good offer. Care to say the Expedia level please?
I'm a male. But my wife and I have had three kids at Amazon and it's treated us well. I also have a female colleague who has had two.
Glad to hear that. Which team in Amazon?
Only parents i saw at Amazon were those who put their child in day care. I have seen parents with multiple babies at Amazon but all they care about is work. I mean if you proactively used just 1.5 month of paternity leave compared to 16-20 weeks in other companies, it shows how work focused you’re
Amazon has great mat leave benefits and you’ll have more opportunities to move internally if you don’t mesh with your first team. Like everyone said it’s a great resume builder if nothing else.
Check other big companies before commenting about benefits in Amazon.. Microsoft gives 6 months of maternity and several months on paternity, Google mat/pet is great, Similarly meta .. Amazon barely matches anything near to these .. And insurance again all the above companies beat Amazon hands down .. My wife took maternity leave after joining microsoft even though we had baby while still working for old company .. I think people inside Amazon think its the best .. I would happily be their customer but not their employee ..
Amazon sucks!!! I can second that while working here for 8 years. Constant stack ranking even when you’re pregnant. People’s death due to work stress. Just 1.5 month of paternity leave that a lot of my co worker never took!!! Parents putting their child in day care and breaking marriages
Depends on the team at amazon, if the team and work are well established amazon migjt be fine but i voted expedia because im not much of a gambler…my team is a start up team at amazon and many of us dont have as much WLB as others
Avoid ShitAzon at all costs. If you want your baby to remember you, join expedia

Amazon is a great offer but 90% chance you will not be in a position to enjoy with your baby .. Believe me life changes upside down after kids .. I am male and we have 2 kids now .. For next two years your work productivity will be down by 50% .. Just spend some more time and try to get an offer from microsoft/google.. they have terrific maternity policies . My wife joined microsoft and took nearly 6 months maternity+baby bonding .. Just an advise… I know its hard for working moms ..
Why didn’t you switch to these companies or even meta which allows paternity leaves?
But then you'd have to work at Meta...
