Amazon vs Palo Alto Networks

Currently working as a L4 SDE at Amazon AWS. Not getting along with my current manager and he is being totally unfair and unreasonable. Not going into details as blind is full of such stories. Have been interviewing past few weeks and got an offer from Palo Alto Networks for principal software engineer position (I know they have inflated titles). Saw few blind posts that cloud in PANW is far worse to work. Same is the work culture. At the same time, work culture at Amazon is not great too. Should I choose PANW over Amazon? Current TC ~200K Offered TC ~300K YOE 2.2/6

With L4 at amazon, and given principal role at Panw is like 2 level jump.

I may be biased and didnt work at ๐ŸŒ firm, but here are my comparison points that I used when chose PANW over ๐ŸŒ company: 1. PAN dont have URA quota and pip stories. 2. colleagues are very friendly and helpful, no backstabbing as there is no cutthroat culture and no upside when behaving like a jerk 3. currently most people WFH, there is no push to return to office, management listens to engineers carefully and asks for feedback on most things 4. Most important for me: top tier colleagues in cybersecurity, very deep expertise and constant innovations. 5. Depends on the team ofc, but you wont be bored with regular CRUD stuff. There is very serious focus on security research, R&D, and innovations. 6. TCwise - good RSU grant and refreshers and stock is ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€ 7. as for WLB - the stock is ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€ so there are expectations related to feature delivery, company wants to win new clients and new business, so your deliverables have direct impact on top line. Competition for customers in security is fierce both with established players and countless startups. Thats why everyone is motivated to do a good job and deliver features. management takes WLB seriously, vacation is unlimited. if you like security as a domain and want to grow professionally in security, PAN is a very good choice, very few alternatives (almost none)

What? I guess it depends on the team, I can't wait to for the first portion of the grant to vest and run away

Palo Alto Networks DJPD78 Dec 23, 2021

Sorry you had this experience. Definitely talk to HR or your skip and see if you can transfer internally

If you're not getting along with your manager, look out for PIP.

Yes this makes it no brainer. Manager will throw you under the bus anyways

Is principal engineer equivalent to director at Palo Alto networks?

Amazon None! OP Dec 10, 2021

Not sure about the levels at PANW.

Palo Alto Networks ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ-๐Ÿคท Dec 10, 2021

Principal is the same as Manager in terms of job level.

Palo Alto Networks SeTX64 Dec 11, 2021

Principle here is more like L6

Palo Alto Networks DbMc27 Dec 17, 2021

What? No. PE is like G's L5 responsibility-wise but L4ยฝ paywise.

Palo Alto Networks SeTX64 Dec 17, 2021

I guess your department pay ๐ŸŒโ€ฆ

Palo Alto Networks SeTX64 Dec 11, 2021

But your TC doesnโ€™t look like Principle, maybe not in Bay Area?

Palo Alto Networks engfoobar Dec 12, 2021

He is in the lower band for principal but his experience is also low
