Amazon vs Raytheon Security Engineering Internship

I would like to get into SpaceX product security after I graduate from my master's program and am deciding between two internships. I don't know what I would be doing at Amazon, but I know at Raytheon I would be doing vulnerability analysis, reverse engineering, and exploit development. I don't particularly want to work at either company but am certain that the skills I will learn at Raytheon will make it more likely that I will get into SpaceX, where I really have no idea what skills I would get out of Amazon. I am trying to weigh the opportunity cost of not taking this Amazon internship and having that brand on my resume (and over double the intern salary) against the possible skills I will develop at Raytheon. Raytheon could make it more likely to get into SpaceX, but Amazon is a good name to have in case SpaceX doesn't work out. For background, I am in a security master's program that turns out multiple FAANG employees a batch. I have a year of experience in security engineering for Aerospace and two years of security operations while I was in my undergrad. I am also cleared up to secret. #cybersecurity #interview #raytheon #spacex #amazon #

Raytheon would get you a security clearance which is nice but Amazon is by far the better brand name. Not sure why you’re so settled on spacex though, there’s plenty of cool prod sec work that pays way more than spacex will pay you.

It seems like a good opportunity to be involved in the beginnings of high-speed space-based data xfer infrastructure. My background and interests also lie in space systems, the space industry is booming rn.

That’s a fair reason - just be careful setting goals on one specific company. Sometimes recruitment processes just don’t happen the way you want them to and a company won’t work out

I don't really know your field but what about an internship at SpaceX? It's one of the best ways to join after college.. so many people started here as interns.

There are no internships in infosec for SpaceX :( I reached out to the product security team lead, but they haven't gotten back to me. Would love to intern there.

I have friends who work at Raytheon doing that type of work and they have been there for like 4-5 years, it seems like good pay with job stability. They're really into their work which should be your deciding factor IMO. I'm sure Amazon pays way better and will likely pay you a bonus for having a clearance (prob just Top Secret in the DC area or Seattle tho). Try to find out what the work would be and use compare the two that way.

That's the problem. Amazon won't tell me until a month out from the internship. I just know it's security. I can tell you it's not RE and exploitation tho.

Gov contracting is not the move. You will be getting paid much less, working with people that are less talented, and will learn less. You are much more likely to get into SpaceX coming from Amazon.

14 people from Amazon @ SpaceX, all SWEs two security guys. 16 from Raytheon, mostly materials. Number are not stellar for either lol

I’m a swe and used to work at Raytheon. Go to Amazon.

If you choose Raytheon, and there’s a backlog in processing security clearances, it will ruin your whole Summer. Something to consider
