Got new grad offers from Amazon Vancouver and a series B startup in Toronto (top 3 startups in Toronto according to LinkedIn) TC for startup offer is 85k, TC for amazon is $130k+ Money is obviously very different. My family and friends are in Toronto. Don't know anyone in Vancouver. Will be doing high impact work at the startup (that's what they made it sound like). I really like the culture of the startup (everyone's chill, work hard, party hard type of a culture). Startup involves long hours Amazon - don't know the team. Will be moving cities (don't know how I'll like Vancouver. I'm a fan of cities like NYC and toronto). Name branding obviously, may get PIP'd? I guess I want to ask SDE1s at Amazon if they get to do a lot of coding/learn a lot, because that's the goal for my first two years. I want to learn a lot and create future value and then could grind out LC later in life and go big N. Thanks #toronto
I’d say choose the startup. You will have the chance to do impressive things and learn a lot. Also you know the people there right? I joined amazon after graduation and I already want to leave. I do code a lot and learn something in amazon, but my toxic manager alone is giving me depression. (In case you think this is my problem. A half of my team members left in the last 3 months) It is not as bad in other teams from what I see, but remember you cannot decide which team you join. And your life will be especially hard if you are in the city alone
Are you in the Vancouver office?
I’m in Toronto
Startups can be a hit or a miss. U might learn a lot (rare) or just do sloppy work (most of them) and learn bad practices.
Amazon. Get out of your confort zone for at least 2 years and then do whatever you want to do. You’ll simply have more options that single hit or miss
Assuming you get to live rent free in Toronto. You'll have to pay ~20k a year in Vancouver for housing.
Renting in both cities, around 20k a yr
How about way better TC at a startup in Toronto? DM for Deliverr
Are these numbers in USD or cad
As far as FAANG is considered, I’d say that L4s at Amazon (especially in AWS and Alexa) probably learn the most after 2 years if they can handle it.
So for the first two years, would you say that going startup is the best? Then after 2 yrs, grind out LC and try to jump to Amazon? Or would Amazon be the best place to go for the first 2 yrs and then reevaluate after?
