First, some facts. In China, Apple's market share has gone up from 12% to 25% in the past 5 years. Do note that Google makes no money from China anyway. Apples does. In India, the iPhone's market share has gone up from 1% to 7% in the past 5 years. This is crucial. Like it or hate it, Apple's premium iPhones are winning in a relatively less prosperous country as well! Apple has a strategy. Google has a lot of experiments. Apple's iPod led to "Podcasting". Apple has been supporting Podcasts in iTunes since 2005. Google launched "Google Listen", a podcast app in 2009. Then, Google killed it in 2012. Then Google launched Google Podcasts in 2018. And has announced to kill it in 2024. There is no first-party app to listen to music or podcasts on Android anymore! Apple launched iMessage in 2011. Google killed Google Talk in 2012. Google launched and killed Hangouts, Meet, Allo, and Duo after that! While the world has moved to WhatsApp, Google is still trying RCS for messaging. Apple launched Apple Pay in 2014, today, it is widely used in countries like Japan and Singapore for public transport payments! Google launched Google Checkout in 2006. Renamed it to Google Pay. Then Google renamed it to Android Pay. Then a few years later, Google renamed it to "Gpay". The last app name won't even show up on your phone if you type "Google" or "Pay" in the search bar! Then Google tried Progressive Web Apps (PWA) on Android. They were meant to be downloadable. And simultaneously experimented with Android apps that can be used without being downloaded! Both failed. Android on Chromebooks failed. Android on tablets has failed. iPad has 30% of the market. Android tablets have been relegated to ebooks or kids' devices. Android on the watch failed. Apple owns 32% of the market. Android watches are used for fitness tracking but that's it. I have been associated with Android for a decade. I worked on Android at Google. I worked on Android at Facebook. I feel sorry for saying this but I am no longer optimistic about the future of Android. :wq #android #iphone
So much nonsense
Whether this actually pans out or not you hit the nail on the head with this statement: “Apple has a strategy. Google has a lot of experiments.” Almost no one actually sticks their neck out and makes product decisions at Google. They just propose experiments.
The first party app to listen to music and podcasts on Android is called YouTube Music. Try it out.
Killing Google Music in favor of YouTube Music was such a massive L.
I took my Google Checkout tar.gz of Play Music mp3's to iTunes Match and never looked back.
Used to be android, every phone would break after a about year just out of warranty. Good luck getting google to fix a pixel phone. Went to iphone, has lasted three years and still going. Need a battery replaced, just go to apple store, easy.
Are you seriously on a tech forum conflating the OS and hardware?
> Are you seriously on a tech forum conflating the OS and hardware? A chain is strongest at its weakest link.
Android is at a disadvantage because it must cater to the lowest common denominator. Apple is building an advantage by integrating hardware and OS to push the limits of performance.
> Apple is building an advantage by integrating hardware and OS to push the limits of performance. This does not justify killing Google Reader, Podcasts, and Play Music. This does not justify why I can't use Google Pay to pay for public transport in Japan. While my wife's iPhone works!
Did you fucking write this whole BS or is it some GPT output.
Sorry, I am not allowed to respond to that :D
fucking great post and sad reality. nit: > There is no first-party app to listen to music or podcasts on Android anymore! youtube music tho.
YouTube music is amazing. Can listen to anything and everything.
> YouTube music is amazing. Can listen to anything and everything. Yeah. Listen to the music you own injected with Google ads.
Agreed with everything. I used to love Android, but got fed up with shit breaking, slow updates (that might not even come, depending on the phone maker or carrier), and Google constantly messing with shit or shutting it down. iPhone is “boring”, in the sense that I don’t have as much control over it as an Android phone, but it is reliable, consistent, fast, and just a good overall product that blends perfectly into the greater Apple ecosystem.
Just buy recent pixels. They have been solid
Yeah Pixel is the Android version of what you describe
This is so so wrong and out of left field 🤦♂️
What's so so right and in the right field?
You told gpt to write some shitty haiku. You’re delusional. I’ve been an iPhone user from the beginning. Android is much better. Android closed the gap years ago. You’re pulling market share numbers out of your ass. On Android I can use my favorite apps that are modded to not show me ads. You can’t do that on iOS. Stick to counting beans at your fin company
