EDIT: Wow. I'm surprised more than 80% of respondents resonate with this issue. _______________ I suffer with anxiety during daily standup calls. Even if I worked all day, I sometimes struggle to provide a detailed update. Some of my peers talk for a whole 2 minutes in detail while I choke and finish off my update in 10 seconds. My manager is on these calls which multiples my anxiety levels. I've been in Tech for over a decade but I still feel like a new guy sometimes on these calls. Do you struggle with anxiety? How do you cope with it? Are there places in Tech that don't have daily standups? #tech #worklife #anxiety
I would recommend you to keep taking notes during your day of work and prep before stand up with bullet points of what you are going to say, this keeps you prepared and under control.
This. On top of the anxiety, trying to "freestyle" your updates will have you stuttering and stammering up a storm. Just take out notepad/notes app/Obsidian, jot down some bullet points for things you've done, and reference those while sharing your updates.
Standup updates are supposed to be brief. I wouldn’t necessarily feel anxious if you only have 10s worth of updates. Personally my updates vary drastically in length. Sometimes it’s listing 1-2 things and I’m done in 10s, sometimes it’s a minute or two before we start getting sidetracked and have to cut a discussion short. If you’re feeling anxious, you can try writing out what you’ll say, by either taking notes throughout the day or setting aside 10-15 min before to reflect and remember relevant details.
Thank you @Amazon/Tableau for the inputs. I started taking notes recently and I agree it helps. I may be overthinking this but sometimes I value my impact with amount of time I speak on the call. Some of my peers are consistently chatty on these calls and it makes me worry others think I don't contribute enough at my level.
I take 5-10 minutes before such meetings to mentally prepare or write bullet points of what I want to talk about. Has helped me for such meetings. Becomes slightly easier/more or maybe just get used to over time.
Amazon said it well. It’s ok for it to be brief. The only value from this communication is to surface any dependencies within your team.
Write it down
take notes before the meeting then you’ll eventually learn how to self elaborate with bs or the real stuff it comes naturally
You are an introvert. It happens to me too. Simply put, some folks are good at talking, they can talk for hours about a small pr.
Agreed.
For introverted folks, it is good to work with very technical managers, those who can code review and gauge the engineer properly or else these engineers are on a slow promo path.
