Anyone have experience with Tek Systems?

I’m a contractor through them. I’m about 30 days out from fulfilling my 6 month contract with them. I have gotten nothing but praise from my hiring manager and senior engineers. I contacted Tek systems and they told me that all signs look like an extension of my contract. I asked if being converted to FTE was an option and the recruiter basically made it sound like he wouldn’t even try for that. He sort of just pushed it off without much explanation. I wasOh a little upset by that. As if he wasn’t even going to bother asking. I found out recently that they take a MASSIVE pay %. I was under the impression that it would be like 10% or so. No I’m making (probably) 20-25k less for their cut. I really want to be converted to FTE. I have worked my ass off, I have a crazy amount of responsibilities, and I have not taken a single day off since starting. I really like working here but the knock in pay and the lack of job security as a contractor gets me. Anyone have any experience with Tek? Should I just ask my boss directly? I don’t want to upset him or sound ungrateful for the opportunity but this is my career right? What would be a good way to start that conversation without sounding ungrateful?

Ask your boss directly, if he wana convert you teksystems can’t do squat

I used to work for a company that used Tek to fill open positions. Assuming your mgr is an employee of the prime on the contract or whichever company tech is a sub to I would talk to them directly. They understand contracting isn't great and your are a valuable employee they would probably like to see you be a part of their company. Most likely your mgr can let you know when they have positions open and you will have to apply for them, even if you will end up doing the exact job your already doing with Tek.

Yeah it looks like I’ll have to talk to him. I don’t want to be a contractor forever... I wouldn’t mind doing the extension if there was some promise of being converted at the end. But if there’s not even a promise at the end of the extensions I think I will start applying elsewhere in the meantime.

Just recently went through this. I was a contractor for a year before getting converted. In my case the issue was 'headcount' as per the hiring manager so if the HM is telling your recruiter something similar it's likely he can't do anything about it. Talk to the HM directly, if they can't bring you on board he might be able to refer you to another team because of your work ethic. Also, I know it sucks to hear but these contracting companies make about 20-30% margin on each hour you work, your just not supposed to find out the exact rate

Most staffing agencies take a large cut. I’ve seen 30-40% markup when I’ve hired contractors. Communicate your desire for a full time role with your manager directly and see if it’s an option.

Fitbit Klee OP Nov 28, 2017

Yeah that’s crazy... 30-40% I did a little research and figured that out and it’s kind of annoying. I’m a new grad and moved out of state for this job. My moms has been having to pay for my car insurance and sends me like $300 a month for food because it’s so expensive to live here. Then I find out these guys are skimming like 20k off the top? I understand they have to make their money but jeez Yeah I will talk to my manager tomorrow and ask about being converted

Apple Crappyzoo Nov 28, 2017

Really? How much they pay you if you dont mind me asking? All other contracters I know get 90-100k in bay, I myself worked as contractor on 80k while i was student in san diego

Amazon Hooliganss Nov 28, 2017

I was reached out to by them right after grad but took another offer. Guess I’m glad I did that.

Fitbit Klee OP Nov 28, 2017

I am lucky for this opportunity. Went to an average school, had average grades, only a little internship experience. So they definitely helped me land a solid job at Fitbit. I am grateful for that. But I don’t want to be a contractor forever.

Amazon Hooliganss Nov 29, 2017

I went to a very average state school as well. I wonder if that’s who they target.

I used to be a recruiter at teksystems and worked with Fitbit as a client. Let your direct manager know that you’re interested in full time and see what they can do. They can usually make things happen and teksystems can’t really do anything about it. The recruiter ignored your ask because they’ll lose their long term commission on you. They make a consistent % for you contracting, but once you go FTE they only get a cut for 3 months.

TekSystems will take advantage of you if you allow them to.

Cisco EulersIdty May 19, 2021

yup, and I found "most" companies would take advantage of you if you let them... it is part of the world as of right now

CareerBuilder hdTI13 Nov 29, 2017

Why would you think Teksystems would ask on your behalf? They make more money if you don't go full-time. Ask your manager. As a general rule, never put your career in somebody else's hands. They don't care as much as you do.

That's right. Never put your career in anyone else's hands. Take control and get that FT role. TEK is a terrible company anyway. Read the "real" reviews on Glassdoor.

You were happy before knowing the amount they make. Now you hate it. Nothing really changed. Talk to your boss. Get FTE and make sure your new contract is more $$$ :O

Sounds about right. Tek Systems is the worse.
