Dropbox falsely closed my account with no warning and I lost access to important files. I'm thinking to sue them for damages but since this kind of behavior by them seems very common I'm wondering if active can share details of how the process went for them, how much $$$ you got, etc
Good luck with that. You had six or more months to prepare.
What do you mean by six months?
They would give you ample notice to do something with your data before they delete it. I personally have had an account for over 12 years without an issue so far because I followed their T&C.
You agreed to terms of service that don’t even warrant merchantability. Your case will get dismissed. There was no legal obligation to save your files.
Yes, but if they close the account without a valid cause (per T&C) and refuse to refund the remaining subscription fee then they need to pay for damages, no?
In that scenario the damages would be the prorated subscription fee.
Always follow the 3-2-1 backup rule
Correct
Heh my friends have been commenting that Dropbox’s emails have been getting more and more aggressive. It used to be “hey old friend, you ran out of space, look at all these nice features you get if you upgrade. Pretty please 🥺 “ to “b*** you have until tomorrow to get me my money or we start shooting knee caps”. But yeah sorry that happened man
That's similar to the renewal process I've heard about from a friend 😂
Dying company tbh they are selling user data to openai
This is objectively false.
Do you use Dropbox frequently? I wonder if it’s because you haven’t signed in for a while. Nonetheless I’m surprised such a big company would do that
Another possibility is you had some sensitive content in your account. They could have flagged and then automatically killed your account, but just a guess
Yes, it was a false positive by some algorithm that the customer rep refused to correct or send to be reviewed
First step would be being able to articulate damages with a dollar amount attached... Easier said then done for most people. Then you might look at what the T&Cs say and go from there.
