Do you have prior kernel experience? If not, I would not recommend. Kernel team is gang of veterans who mostly drive what projects to do. Any newbie is left doing QA for them. Fought hard and lost.
These veterans are extremely intelligent but not good mentors. They are not willing to mentor a newbie. So the left over work you get becomes boring
