Need help deciding between Google Hardware in Chicago and Apple Hardware in Austin. (RF/Wireless). Received verbal offers from both companies and need to make a decision soon. I am really confused about three main points. From what I read on Blind, the WLB at Google is better than Apple. Is this true for wireless hardware teams? Can anyone who has experience on this comment. Chicago weather is brutal compared to Austin. ( I am currently in California). I have quite a few friends in Austin and none in Chicago at the moment. I don’t have the offer numbers yet but I am expecting similar offers from both. I understand it’s easier to poll and vote, but could you guys also comment so that i know my reasons before committing to either companies? YOE:6 TC:180k #hardware #rf #google #apple
Even though you are in the wireless team, there are many factors. The data you provided is not enough to compare and I am not sure if Blind will be able to help you here. There are plenty of wireless teams both at Google and Apple. It is difficult to compare. Are you going to Google Nest, Pixel or Apple iPhone, Watch team? Second, location is very specific which makes it more difficult. The general mindset about WLB being better at G is true in Bay Area. However, G is pretty bureaucratic. These rules might not be true for Chicago or Austin. Third, support from vendors as mentioned by hector is awesome for Apple. However, QC has been not that supportive lately. Otherwise, Apple gets awesome support. It would only matter if you are engaging with the vendors though. Not sure what your role is The main question that you need to ask is what you want to do and how you can achieve your goal? Is it weather that you are worried about more or is it WLB or is it growth?
lol what?
??
Apple wireless has brutal WLB, would not recommend. People frequently pull 70-80 hour weeks.
But they'll make soooooo much money.
I thought Google pays well too
What are the roles ?
For RF Desense teams
If both roles are for Desense, then Austin would be a better location in my openion.
How long did it take for you to get the results after google and apple virtual on-site interviews?
2-3 days after interview
Since when Google has hardware team in Chicago? Last time I checked Mofos doesn't want to hire anywhere else other than Sunnyvale or mountain view.
Pixel is in Chicago
Apple hardware any day if WLB is not a concern Google is still miles behind Apple when it comes to hardware
Texas summers are more brutal than Chicago winters imo.
It all comes down to the offer. I have a feeling goog will present a better offer.
Austin is completely ruined. I would go to Chicago if I were moving, 100%
Speaking from core hardware experience, Apple is an advanced Hardware manufacturing org, they have high capabilities & strong relationships with suppliers & chip makers. Whereas Google, is still in a very early stage, see Pixel6 is still facing supply chain issues. You will learn much-advanced hardware tech at Apple but with certain restrictions. At Google, you are free to experiment without much question. Google WLB & other facilities cannot be matched by Apple but you need to decide what matters for you.
Have you worked in HW at Apple or Google? What was your experience like if you did?
Still, at G. I would say G is slow in terms of execution & design implementation at various stages. There is so much we can do but I never understood where things get slow….. Suppliers & Manufacturers don’t listen much. For them, Apple is the only godfather they need for survival.🤣 One of the assemblers even stopped the Xbox line just to meet the Apple targets.
