As ardent of an Apple fanboy I’m, I struggle to see the point of MacBooks and what they consider is groundbreaking. I love iPhones, Apple Watches, AirPods etc. and how they constantly innovate year over year to delight customers (notably, safety features like fall detection, crash detection, satellite SOS, EKG etc that have saved hundreds of lives) MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is M1, M2, and M3 - slap it on the same form factor year over year with little to zero customer delighting features. What sets MacBooks apart from let’s say a Chromebook? Most folks use laptops only to watch Netflix, type emails, or watch 🌽. Apart from the beautiful aluminum chassis, what is a layman doing with all the horsepower they don’t even need? TC 370K
Is this a troll post? I use my m2 to develop applications. On my desk, I hook it up to a 34" curved monitor and use both screens. On the go, I have the same environment and I'm comfy with all my tools, connections, keys... They keyboard is comfy, the touchpad is great, the gestures make it even better. I don't even use an external mouse. I'm actually not a fan of the OS, but the hardware is just that good. I'd rather use Ubuntu if I could, but I need Adobe products for work. Edit to add: the hardware usually lasts about 5 to 7 years for me at least. I guess that's your question... Why would someone buy a new model year over year. You don't, unless you want to waste money.
Yeah, you’re a niche user. I’m talking about 99.99999% of the rest of the common users.
Oh, the other users just want the apple logo I'm not even joking
That's funny. I'm the exact opposite. No idea why people pay premiums for iPhones, AirPods. But a low end MacBook Air is an absolutely phenomenal machine for home usage.
Guessing you dont have to multitask in development where you can run 4+ memory hungry docker builds in a single machine ? Try that in anything other than a mac.
I have a razer 15, which I use when I need to play games on the road. It performs well but is too hot to hold and drains a battery in under an hour. I can use my mbp all day. Also, it’s unix based so I can do real work, windows requires that awful os and cygwin and I have dark thoughts in mere minutes. If people made games for the mbp I could do away with the razer… but ms still has the developers attention, and probably always will given economics. But, my RSUs aside, the mbp is the better laptop. I can’t imagine wanting a pc laptop for anything but games. Chromebook? Even my kids hate those. I wouldn’t touch one.
Windows has had windows subsystem for linux fire a couple of years. It works very well. Apple got me with the hardware though, macos I’ve come to tolerate now.
For developing applications for Mac or iPhone we need Mac. Also, development in general lot of people enjoy the command line system which is similar to Linux and also a great UI experience as well as robust hardware.
It's a laptop that can last a decade. That alone sets it apart from anything else on the market.
You’re complaining that 99% of people don’t need these machines on a forum where 50% of people need the machines for work.
Lightroom and Photoshop demand some crazy power. Other than that I just watch Netflix.
Yeah my point is M1 can handle it just fine.
The advancements of Mac are phenomenal. Power, cooling, can handle anything.
