How did this happen? (Meta Stock)
When apple announced their vision pro headset, they announced they’d be partnering with unity for developers to build apps for the headset. Since then, unity’s stock has increased quite a bit, and I’m having trouble understanding why. Mainly because: - unity already powers the majority of games on the App Store today - their monetization strategy relies heavily on the success of the software their users create (via ads) so even though apple has announced an “official” partnership with unity, unity has already been behind a lot of the apps on the App Store, so why would this partnership be different/increase their revenue to justify the continued increase in their valuation?
Unity already has a AR library which allows devs to port games to multiple devices using the same kit. The C# library on Unity is robust and integrates well with native code. This means Unity developers may not have to jump far to build Vision OS apps in an engine they know well already. It's to Unity devs what a npm package would be for web devs. Say you built a game like I have for mobile. It compiles and works on Mac, iPhone, Android, and even Web GL. What's to stop me from dropping it on Vision OS day 01? Just official support. I would have to write a small amount of code, then change my deployment target, click build, I'm good. Also Unity isn't behind apps on the app store. They're the leading platform. You could argue about AAA games with Unreal, but the market is dominated by pump and dump dopamine clickers.
I see, this is helpful - thank you!
Happy to help! I'm very excited for the release of the vision os kit.
