Apple reneged my offer

Was just told that the SVP didn’t approve the offer. I was given verbal offer and just needed to wait for SVP to sign off so no negotiation or numbers were even discussed yet. I was on hold for 2 weeks. Apparently the manager is unhappy about it but no explanation or reasoning was given on why SVP decided to change his mind. Recruiter at the time was telling me every other day that they’d have an update very soon and to know before the end of week, etc. Recruiter is giving me a call soon but I don’t think it’ll be anything new/different. What a waste of time :/ UPDATE: After speaking with recruiter, she said that the execs wanted to change the role of the position. The SVP had many discussions and decided that the role itself needed to change scope and hire a different skill set, specifically someone with PhD in optics/photonics. Initially the managers told me they either wanted someone with more experience on software side, or someone with PhD level knowledge. I’m somewhat in the middle as I’ve been in this field for quite some time and knew pretty much all of what they were looking for in terms of knowledge in addition to skill. My friend who works within this group had told me himself although everyone in the group has a PhD, he feels strongly that a lot of the work does not require a PhD. He also mentioned that during their morning huddle that his manager and my would-be manager were very happy with my experience and were strongly against the decision. In the end, oh well :/ Recruiter did mention that my interview feedback will stay in place but it’s unlikely that a new req even opens up specifically for what they initially looked for and even if it did, the SVP would probably not approve anyways. She did say I can apply to other roles but I’d still have to go through the whole process again, though the feedback I already have will play a large role (not sure if I can believe that). The most disappointing thing to me is just that this team and field were such a great fit. I really liked the people and what they were working on (they’re a startup within Apple). I can always look for new roles within Apple but not entirely sure if I can even find a good role that fits.

Not a waste of time. Ask the recruiter to use your interview feedback and find another team. Even more easier if you’re able to talk to the manager and ask him to refer you to other teams where he thinks you might fit.

not gonna happen at apple. It sucks I know. But you have to interview all over again.

LexisNexis !isBatman Nov 9, 2020

Wow. Well op can at least give it a go. What’s there to lose at this point anyway!

WTF!! Truly unprofessional

Deloitte NWSE54 Nov 9, 2020

Why does it matter to them? They’re worth over a trillion dollars!

Financial Services Company OkHu47 Nov 9, 2020

Yes yes the way to ensure that worth is protected and grows is to just hire whomever. Let’s just give out cash to all. That’s why you’re a Deloitte guy

Intel nineninety OP Nov 9, 2020

It was easily the best interview performance I’ve given. I was really looking forward to GTFO of Intel. My only hope now is to do an additional round with someone or maybe the SVP thinks it’s not a good time to hire and maybe in the next year when budget is better.

Adobe bndc Nov 9, 2020

Yeah, see if you can reach out and add the manager to your network. Let them know you’re still interested, maybe ask if there are any technical skills you can learn which would be helpful. If the position opens up in the future, you may be contacted

Ah don't take it heart. I've been in the same situation where Markit manager wanted to hire me, but the SVP was against the fact that manager needed any extra help on the desk. And finally I never got the offer after 5 rounds. So yeah, these things happen. Sorry about that dude, but keep your head up you'll land something better.

The same exact thing happened 4 years ago with Apple for me. It really sucks that they make you go through all that and then some SVP decides based on random things he sees that they won’t approve. In my case, we discussed numbers too. But you know what? This will suck. Not gonna lie. But you’ll do great. Life will go on. Pick yourself up. There’s other people like this. Good luck to you.

What did the reason you for reject?

EATON tycq24 Nov 9, 2020

The SVP wanted to do a reorg and didn’t want to approve any new hires until after the reorganization. Turns out it had nothing to do with me or my performance. Was at the right place at the wrong time. The recruiter was genuinely remorseful.

Apple awup Nov 9, 2020

Is it a hardware position? I'm swe, so not sure how things are in hardware orgs. I've never heard the VP/SVP declines the offer. This was literally the first time. It's usually just a formal paperwork from what I've seen and experienced. Also candidates have the option to interview at different teams, so try another team that's under a different SVP. By the way, did the SVP decline just the package (numbers) or the whole offer? If it's just the numbers, wait to see what they're offering instead.

Intel nineninety OP Nov 9, 2020

I was not expecting this either. They told me the group gave a unanimous yes to hire me, and they just need to write some paperwork on the decision to hire me and the VP approves. They made it sound like no big deal, that it just goes through no problem. I never had any numbers yet so there was no package. He just decided to not hire (whether the position was closed or if it’s just me is unclear).

Apple awup Nov 9, 2020

Sorry to hear this. Usually they give out the numbers and after negotiation they take it to VP to approve (which again is not a big deal, just a formality). Ask the recruiter if you can interview with other teams.

Damn... sorry to hear.

Cisco .________. Nov 9, 2020

What a clickbait. Apple didn't renege the offer, stop lying. If you did not get a signed offer from Apple back, you never truly got an offer! A verbal offer can always be pulled until the time it is signed and approved by the execs, happens all the times in all the companies. It sucks, but apple didn't renege, get that straight!!!

Intel nineninety OP Nov 9, 2020

Yeah I was not sure how to word it since it was never official.

Apple Qil Nov 9, 2020

Isnt verbal offer good enough? At that point wouldnt it be fair to assume that you have the job and reject other companies' offers/interviews? Because other companies' offers have their own deadlines that you need to be mindful of as well

Amazon USA 🇺🇸 Nov 9, 2020

Same happened to me last year. Was given verbal offer for ICT4 and had a chat with manager about the projects and roadmap. Then SVP didn’t approve the offer. If you have to interview for other team, then it will be all over again unlike Google, Amazon, Facebook. Apple does a notoriously shit job at this. Move on OP.
