YOE: 6 TC: 320k Considering a move to Apple or Google. Google offered lv5, apple ict4. Let's say TC offered will be similar, which is better for career growth (promotion + learning) for someone hoping to promote to next level? (lv6 at G and ict5 at A) I like Apple's team a bit more but Google's team fits my skillset as well. Main goal is to get to the next level in about two years. Thanks! #apple #google
If you want to get next level in 2 years, stay in FB should be your first choice
I agree with this. Unless you’re a super good interviewer, there’s value to waiting for internal promotions.
This^
Being happy with your team is worth more than nearly anything else
From what I’ve heard, ICT4 -> ICT5 at Apple is really difficult, if that’s something you care about
This is correct. Unless you’re IS&T but ict5 in IS&T is basically ict4 in every other org.
Yeah, that's what I heard as well. Also according to levels.fyi, there's only 2 levels above ict4 so that might be why promotions after ict4 is super hard at Apple?
If you want to work hard and get fast growth you should stay at fb
Don't like fb eng culture any more, so want to try something slower and more solid : )
What don't you like about it?
TC at Google?
It's highly dependent on team at Apple. You need to have two consecutive years (two perf cycles) of 9/9 ratings to go from IC4 to IC5. Even if you perform well, your 9/9 rating depends if your team/org is in upwards trajectory or not, so it can be somewhat political.
Two years of these ratings ? Or two halfs?
Two years, the major perf cycle is every year around september
If you believe you need to learn and grow to l6 at google, your promo will take more than 2 years. 2 years is if you are already performing at l6
So you want to work slower but get promoted faster? Maybe you want reevaluate your expectation and make it realistic before you choose your next career move?
I know I'd promote faster at FB, but after 5 years at FB I want to move slower but generate higher quality work. So overall the intensity might be the same. (time spent x quality). I'd probably learn more this way.
2 year is not long enough, especially for a new hire, unless you start driving 3 projects and land them. You need 2+ SSE ratings on you can expect nothing more then CME the first year
2year l5 to l6 , lol
Do you have experience trying to promote from lv5 to lv6 at google? I know it's hard but I hope two years is a long enough time, no?
Nope unless you make sure your team is growing like gangbusters.. and even then
