Applied Materials Offer Evaluation
Got a job offer for a Staff Mechanical Engineer role from Applied Materials and need to evaluate the offer and my options. Base: 180k Bonus: 36k (20% guaranteed according to HR) RSU: 87k over 4 years Sign on : 30k TC: 237k YOE: 8 total and 5 in semiconductor. My current TC at Lam is about 160k so I definitely want to leave. I'm not too sure I want to stay in semiconductor industry. The pay is lower than other industries and with too much work. The culture is way more old school than other companies in the Bay Area. I have first interviews with Apple, Intuitive Surgical, and smaller startup. I want to explore other options but I need to make a decision on the offer soon. Any advice?
Offer is quite goood.. but semi is very stagnant like you said .. u can take amat and keep trying for better ones.. Atleast the current offer is better than what u make at lam..
All the other post I've read have said that. No promotions. Slight pay raise. No RSU refresh. I'm pretty sick of this industry. My current project at Lam is pretty bad and it's not worth sticking around even if I like my coworkers and boss.
I could not agree more.. even i am fed up of this industry and way it rewards you.. trying to change my field from mech to data science
By the way intuitive is also very old culture thinking..be careful before u jump from one rat hole to another

Apple will give u way better offer for sure.. plus try tesla or other start ups in bay area
Definitely. I'm trying to get to Cruise or another autonomous vehicle company. I heard Tesla is pretty bad with pay and wlb. How is wlb at Applied?
Same as lam.. initial first year will be bad as you will be pretty much starting from scratch.. so you will have to earn all the name and get in good books of folks.. second year onwards it will be similar.. u will see a personal detachment in amat compared to lam… lam does care a lot about benefits and families.. amat being a bigger elephant is straight business
Looks pretty decent for semi equipment but it sounds like you want to get out. My advice to everyone in that industry who asked me that is that if they want to leave, then they should leave. Plenty of better places to work for.
what other places do you recommend that semi tool manufacturing people move?
What month is year end bonus paid at Lam? U may miss both bonuses in 2021
Lam pays out twice a year. Applied offer contract says it pays out prorated bonus for the year.
Lam bonus comes in march.. amat is end of dec
Lam is march and august as they divide in two halves
Semi is OK, just get into a more leading edge portion of the segment. Sensor, IoT integration and mechatronics are always hot. There are pros and cons for being in BU engineering v a central engineering group. Fight aggressively to spin off support work and always ask for/execute on new stretch projects.
You can got to amat and then switch to other companies if you get an offer. Anyway you don't want semi so shouldn't matter.
That's what I'm think now. Just going try to leverage this offer with other companies.
