People say good perks and salary. But isn't it super boring there? LinkedIn just has the website. Netflix just has streaming sitting on top of AWS. Both already up and running. Where is the challenge.
You forgot Amazon in the list of web products already up and running
Might be interesting to change that god awful UI of Netflix. Their ratings must be complete garbage if they’re hiding it all like they do.
I wish I could permanently hide most of their awful originals
They act like they don’t have metadata on every title and only allow you to select “TV Shows” ...I mean really dude — what if I want to get nerdy and get down into the weeds on some random sport because I’m nostalgic? It’s a pretty sad UI and I wonder how much they lose out on because people just can’t find anything other than The Office and Netflix originals that no one cares to watch these days
Go work for a startup if you want interesting work.
LinkedIn have a suite of products targeted at recruiters. These are not exposed to regular users. They also do a lot of machine learning that needs to be tweaked to find you connections. Netflix is building a suite of products for film producers. They may someday spin out their own Pixar and Marvel Studios. Or maybe just merge with Disney
Is there a person from Netflix that could provide more details?
Our machine learning is very rudimentary fyi. The most interesting work is done around search and title normalization and we do have quite a few interesting datasets but gdpr really limits with we can do with it.
Couldn’t the same be said about most of Amazon retail teams?
All teams at Amazon are in full empire building mode.
Netflix seems fairly interesting and their biggest challenge is scale. But I would think their tech problems are solved already. Their biggest problem today is making content that attracts customers before their debt goes belly up
Scale is still a problem to solve for most tech companies. If scale isn’t a problem, then what are you doing that every other company isn’t? Without scale, everything you are doing is basically CRUD. At LinkedIn for example, our growth for this year blew way past our expectations so we are still trying to solve for that. In addition to linkedin.com we have several enterprise products for recruiters, job seekers, learning & development, sales reps, marketers, and freelancers. All of these products take a significant amount of effort in product development, machine learning, performance, and operability to ensure the businesses that buy our products are successful We also have teams responsible for infra products like Kafka and Samza who are tirelessly trying to write new features and support our own internal users while supporting other “actually interesting” companies that are also using those products. Sorry if this all sounds boring to you.
With scale, it's just CRUD at scale
LinkedIn can’t even solve real-time notification or comments...so, what’s that about scale?
Netflix sucks. Takes eons to load on my tv and mostly throws errors.
Consider upgrading TV or internet
Doesn't fix the problem. That's why y'all almost got taken over by Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.
Why do you want challenging work OP? What's your career goal in 10 years from now?
There is no challenge. It's a facade. Thanks for spreading the truth.
