10yr experience as a product manager (consumer channels) at various top banks (also former consultant at big 4) but I’ve gotten zero interest from tech firms big or small. Trying to figure out if it’s just me or if there’s a larger trend and perhaps what some of you can recommend to improve attractiveness. * edited original question to include big legacy institutions not just banking.
Maybe their profiles present a better candidate? Try changing up how your profile!
This will sound crazy... but I wrote their profile!!! Hence why I’m convinced being in banking for FANGS isn’t taken seriously. I’m vastly oversimplifying - but perhaps the question to ask is what perception do FANGs (and potentially start-ups) in the Bay Area have of large legacy institutions and the people who work for them?
Exactly what you just said? Legacy.
It’s probably more of a culture concern than an experience issue. People in banking are used to a very hierarchical command structure and a top down approach to projects and workflow. That being said, I have worked alongside plenty of people who came from banking and finance, so maybe you just need a referral or to network more.
Agree with above. Also, because of regulations / culture etc banks are know to move notoriously slow. Hence the rise of Fintech
You will likely be significantly levelled down but still make more money.
hi..is the situation same? are you gettig any interests from FAANG for PMing? I am considering going from SWE in banking to PM in few months and signing up MBA part time at top 10. Eventually want to do PM at Tech/FAANG.
Yes, I ended up interviewing at Apple, Facebook and Amazon and got no offers. The trick is to get a referral but I can tell 10000% when we get to talking about experience they get turned off by the banking way of doing things. Preparation is key.
@US Bank - if you’re having difficulties going directly to FAANG, maybe you can first transition to a fintech and go from there. Or you can also consider product-partnership roles at FAANGs where they need people with banking industry knowledge and relationships to take products and present custom solutions to banks. AWS comes to mind here.
What role are you applying for?
Obviously product manager
I meant in general, I get ZERO inquiries on LinkedIn... I have friends in peripheral industries that STILL get inquiries from Google/Apple despite me having stronger tech background and more management experience.
