With so many companies having chief diversity officers, we still have diversity issues. Why are there so few black software engineers?
Yes they are.
Yes, virtue signalling
Because no one cares enough to help where it matters: early on in childhood.
You really think no person cares about early childhood opportunities for underrepresented minorities? Not a single person? I’m p sure there’s hundreds maybe thousands of orgs dedicated to exactly this both in childhood and in adulthood.. I’m not saying we’re at the place where we need to be at all but I wouldn’t say no one cares
True caring would be providing social programs that scale rather than relying on private citizens/orgs/benefactors. Society as a whole doesn’t seem to give a shit…the same people yelling “Affirmative action is wrong!!!” also vote against funding programs that would level the playing field early in life to obviate the need for affirmative action. That’s how you know they’re full of shit.
Isn’t the whole reason we have diversity initiatives because we have diversity issues? It’s not like once you put in a chief diversity officer, things are fixed. It’s just one piece of the puzzle in helping close the gap. I think probably most people who work in D&I truly do care about what they’re doing and to say it’s for optics is a total insult.
This thing IMO is no different from the caste based reservation system in India. Of course there are really bright and smart individuals in the underrepresented groups that anyways shine and grow even without this explicit D&I BS. I am seeing a trend where a lot of these diversity hires with no merit / skillset, joining companies and have no clue how to go about doing their jobs - making others to actually do their job - with no real intent to learn.
Agreed that this is BS…countless non-POC counterparts join companies and have no clue how to do their job but are a given a pass and “mentored”. Meanwhile, POC are expected to come in over-qualified. And please stop with the “diversity hires”, what does that even mean? We’re supposed to have diversity in our hiring.
I work for a small company owned and managed by two old white people. There is no diversity officer, rainbow flags or emails about XYZ history month. They are too small an operation to waste any money on virtue signaling. It is by far the most diverse company I have ever seen both in terms of race and gender. The place looks like the cover of a college brochure. They achieve diversity by simply treating people equally and fairly, and being willing to accommodate parents and the elderly (old people are actually very valuable in my industry due to subject matter expertise) with suitable work schedules.
What are the numbers?
The reason why there are few black software engineers is because of black culture while in school . Being smart, and “talking white” is considered lame. Speaking from first hand experience as a black software engineer.
I’m black and this is bullshit. The kids who went on about “talking white” and trying to strip people of “blackness” for being in gifted & AP classes growing up were white kids, not black kids. I got good grades yet my white Math and Science teachers in HS never cared to invest in me like they did white & Asian kids. Computer Science was a niche curriculum & extra curricular activity only reserved for them at my high school. I got the same good grades in core classes but never got invited to join the clubs like those other kids. And spare me about initiative…I was 15 years old and none of those other kids were taking initiative. They were also virulently racist so I had no desire to be around them. I had no idea what a career in computer science could even look like until after I’d committed to an entirely different career.
It’s sad that a black kid has to “talk white” to be respected.
It's just part of the Woke culture that every company needs to follow to avoid in turn the cancel culture. I hope both these "cultures" burn to ground.
Its about time..this will also pass.
What does a CDO do?
I think a CDO ensures that diversity is represented in hiring decisions, people policies, and support various ERGs like Black, LGQTB+ etc. Essentially trying to make the workplace a very inclusive environment.
What do they do exactly? How is their performance measured?
There are chief diversity officers, because we still have diversity issues. Systemic racism is why we have so few black software engineers. And, as with most systems engineering problems, there are no simple solutions.
There is no systemic racism in US. It's the best country to build career, become successful, create financial stability and enjoy fine things of this life. Never-ever I have hired someone based on their gender, color or ethnicity, I only look for one thing-->Merit. Clear the bar get hired.

Anthropic, Plaid, Scale, Notion offer review
Would you hire a less qualified candidate only because you feel sorry for them ?
Fucking spot on
Why do you people always think about “less qualified” when the diversity topic comes up? So you think all of the white people getting hired over BIPOC are actually more qualified? That’s a shocking way to think in 2021
