Just saw Tony Safoian (CEO of SADA, a GCP partner) post on LinkedIn about headcount reduction. He called out the roles that were impacted and every single one is an IC role. It feels like unless an entire team is laid off, managers get to keep their jobs. Sure in some situations, similar teams may be merged but mostly they are immune. Am I missing something? #layoffs
Generally yes, unless the whole team or product is being cut, they'll still need a manager even if there are only 3-4 ICs. But in cases like meta where the whole divisons are being axed, then noone is safe even director or vps.
Yes, it's difficult to find good managers. Also, think about it logically. Usually managers have tremendous trust and access to company policy not available for the regular person. Those who are stupid enough are fired right away. Those who aren't are kept for growth. Note that research shows that on a layoff, an extra 0.5 of the layoff size quits voluntarily around a layoff, so managers can already decide to leave by themselves.
My manager was let go and his peers and his manager currently I am an IC with no up line
Definitely not safe. There are 10 ICs for every manager, so that’s why you mostly hear about ICs
Nope, often let go.
Managers are let go first, team redistributed
I think that makes sense!
Whats also frustrating is that the VPs and execs who made the decision to overhire still get to keep their jobs. No one should ever be loyal to their employer after this!
Oh, you were the one with the crystal ball that told us how markets would fare. I wish Zuck talked to you before expanding.

Musings (rant?) of an old timer
They are the first ones to go
Not sure I get how. A team of 12 lays off 4. Other eight still need a manager
You can start combining teams as they get smaller and reduce managers. But first the team shrinks. Then managers shrink.
