I’m leading a team of 100+ people. Would be happy to answer any brutally honest questions of yours. TC: ~1M #engineering
What is yours and the company's take on dropshippers and generic-sellers? Essentially the set of sellers whose generic replica items that flood Amazon.
We don’t *really* build a marketplace but we want buyers(or as you call them consumers) to know what they are buying. So if they want to buy from a drop shipper and wait weeks for their items — it’s their choice.
Is it true that Shopify developers work overtime and work during weekends?
I bet there are some people that do, but I don’t think anyone ever asked them. If you hire ‘driven’ people, they tend to work when *they* want.
Don’t you think it’s coz of peer pressure? What’s the pip culture?
Please share high quality tips to become a great eng leader.
- Learn how to connect the purpose of individual to the purpose of your team. - Learn to understand people and accept that you don’t know shit - Choose a field of technology and be the expert in it. That will help you on any level
Thank you for this honest session and your time ! Just had one question .. by field of technology you mean a tech stack and be absolutely thorough in it - or a stream - like front end ( then choose one framework work - eg React) vs backend ( example python etc). ?
What would you do differently when given a chance?
Ouf, lots of things :D but regrets of past won’t make you move forward. Get your learning from yours(and others) mistakes and move forward
Well done OP
what’s your demographic
Gender diversity is around 80/20 male/female Ethnicity was 70/30 white/BIPOC in 2020, don’t know current number as we went to more countries and fully remote. Age is a distribution with majority of people in their 20s and 30s. Don’t know all the stats tbh
what about your own?
What all factors do you use to determine your reports performance in the review cycle?
- 360 feedback - each person has their goals plan that they set themselves and we help them to achieve them. Then we review how good they are in achieving what they want. Which is veeery subjective and highly dependent on a context. But helps us to understand how diligent people are, how ambitious they are, what they do when they cannot achieve what they set for themselves etc. - we review data as well. Like PRs, reviews, tech designs written, but with a big grain of salt since no PRs are the same. But two people on the same team may work on the same project and have a completely different output. So that helps managers to ask questions(not make decisions). - we also calibrate on what we expect from each level, so that each of the managers can understand what to look for and what questions to ask or investigate.
Yeah measurements can be misleading. My manager likes to measure commits but I squash my commits before opening a PR so that my PR will usually have 1-3 commits tops With PRs it’s more of the same. I lead a small team and hand out the tasks that are ready to get done and take on the ones that need to wait on another team or have high ambiguity. I’ve two tasks I’ve completed except for the API that’s been pending from another team for weeks now So by almost all measurements I’m not doing great. But I’m coaching, on call, unblocking teammates. How can I make a great case for myself in spite of low metrics?
