I'm a mid level engineer (eyeing senior promo) and my manager has tasked me with mentoring a more junior engineer. My manager specifically asked me to take on this role and mentioned I will need to ensure the junior engineer hits their sprint deliverables. This seems like a whole lot of extra work for me to take on as a mid level engineer. Typically mentoring falls to senior engineers. I've agreed to it but it seems off.
It’s a good learning opportunity and resume bullet point
How do you expect to become a senior if you don’t start learning the work of a senior…… da fuq
Mentoring is important at all levels . It will help you to improve various things including documentation, processes, SLA, better code reviews and it helps you to improve your work too You have to demonstrate some traits of next level in order to get promoted and mentoring is very organic way to test the responsibility and culture you build
I understand that it's an opportunity to demonstrate senior level ability. I guess I just didn't expect the part about ensuring he's hitting his sprint goals. Is that typical for mentor responsibilities?
The SMART goals are always measurable to minimise bias in the team. The metric itself could vary 1) onboarding faster could be one metric 2) code quality could be other metric 3) deliverables velocity could be other 4) end to end ownership could be other It is okay to get surprised now , than after appraisal . You can choose to say if you want to stretch and demonstrate some data points there or delay it for 6 months and not be disappointed if promo does not happen

He’s basically testing you to see if he should promote you or not. Pretty common to give employees higher level tasks before promo. Its stupid tho how the bar for internal promos is higher than the bar for external candidates.
