At what level in a company is it no longer worth it to switch jobs every 2-3 years? I'm asking mostly with respect to IC engineers, but interested to hear about how this might differ for PMs, EMs, etc. Location: Bay area YOE: 1.5 + PhD dropout TC: 550k

What level is that and company
I came in as a senior and was promoted to staff after a year. Can't say the company because my team is really small and I don't want to dox myself.
Can't say the company because your team is small? What size is the company? I'm not sure how they would identify you by a TC estimation but can you give the industry then?
I would say once you hit L5 level at Google/Facebook, and whatever that level is at other companies. So probably sometime between senior and on your way to staff, you'll start sticking out places for longer because otherwise it becomes less feasible to get further promotions.
PMs are ICs too btw
When you reach 500TC
That comp is fucking mental for 1 YOE. How on earth did you swing that? Was there a massive uptick in stock price?
Got approached during my PhD program, decided to take some time off. I do applied research related to my PhD work now. Comp includes a recent promotion to staff scientist.
How much % is cash + public stock?
Are you enjoying what you do? If not, keep looking. You make enough that you are comfortable so now you get to choose if you are doing fulfilling work. That’s not for Blind to decide.
Not sure if your question was rhetorical, but I'll answer it anyway. There is a fair bit of stress and wlb isn't great, but I'm really enjoying things which is the reason I posted this question. My boss is fun to work with and I like my team; the work is super interesting too.
Not rhetorical at all, sincerely it’s about perspective. My initial interpretation is you were driving external validation in this decision, but the reality is we are all on different career paths. Also, a good boss is hard to find!
Hitting Google’s L6 equivalent or getting to a company you are confident won’t promote you to L6 as quickly as elsewhere. Before that, its pretty easy to get promoted within a couple years or even level up through interview.
With that kind of TC, just save money like crazy for a couple of years and then take a much less stressful job.
